On Sunday evening, a single-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Franklin Street and Church Street outside of Target, knocking down a light pole.

According to Ran Northam, communications manager for the Town of Chapel Hill, the driver was transported to a UNC hospital, although their condition is unknown.

Several ambulances, police cars and a firetruck responded to the scene.

Mansoor Eskandari witnessed the car accident from the sidewalk across the street in front of Que Chula.

"The guy was in the center of the street, kept spinning and smoke was coming out of the tires," Eskandari said.

As of 9 p.m., Franklin Street is open, but Church Street remains taped off.

This is a developing story.

Susie Webb contributed reporting to the story.
