The No. 1 North Carolina women’s tennis team (28-0) defeated No. 9 Wake Forest (17-13), 4-0, in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday.

What happened?

UNC clinched the doubles point to get off to a hot start. The No. 18 duo of senior Elizabeth Scotty and first-year Reese Brantmeier defeated No. 18 graduate student Anna Brylin and junior Brooke Killingsworth 6-2. Following in their teammates footsteps, No. 11 sophomore Carson Tanguilig and junior Fiona Crawley coasted past their Wake Forest opponents with a 6-1 win to clinch the point.

Scotty dominated her singles match-up, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 and putting the first singles point on the scoreboard. Without dropping a single game point, No. 1 Crawley finished right behind Scotty, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Following Scotty and Crawley’s victories, it was a race for who would clinch the final point. The answer came in the form of Tanguilig.

Who stood out?

Throughout her singles match-up, Scotty forced a quick pace and controlled the court for the entirety of her match-up. Only giving up one game point, the North Carolina senior relied on side-to-side strokes to force her Wake Forest opponent off-balance and into making costly mistakes. Today’s victory in singles puts her season record at 19-1.

When was it decided?

North Carolina never relented from the very beginning of singles play, winning five out of six first sets.

Despite getting off to a slow start, Tanguilig tied up her first set 3-3. Winning the key break point, she grabbed the remaining three points to win her set 6-3. The UNC sophomore continued to dominate into the second set, only giving up one game point. Tanguilig clinched the match victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Why does it matter?

With UNC’s win today and final regular season wins last weekend, the Tar Heels have posted 28 consecutive match victories – the second-longest winning streak in program history.

In addition to breaking records, the North Carolina team’s performance exemplified their singles dominance. Despite being the only UNC player to drop in the first set, Brantmeier was showing promise of a comeback, only giving up two game points. Before the match was clinched by Tanguilig, Brantmeier was leading 4-2.

When do they play next?

The Tar Heels advance to the semi-final match, where they will take on the winner of No. 4 Virginia versus No. 5 Miami. UNC will play at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
