Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger announced this morning that she will not be seeking re-election. Hemminger was first elected mayor in 2015 and won re-election in 2019.
The filing period for November’s mayoral race ends on Friday. Current Chapel Hill Town Council member Adam Searing is the only candidate who has filed as of now.
“I came into this job in 2015 because I cared about our future and knew we needed to make better choices in order to be sustainable and resilient economically, environmentally, and socially,” Hemminger said in the press release. “Over almost eight years we have all worked extremely hard to put our community on a better path toward that future.”
She said in the press release that planning, economic development and building equity were areas of progress in Chapel Hill during her mayoral term, naming the Complete Community framework, the Downtown Together Partnership, Historic Civil Rights Task Force and other local projects.
She said that she will continue to support efforts that continue to make Chapel Hill a more sustainable and inclusive community.
“Many of the decisions we faced were hard, but we knew that this progressive vision and its implementation are crucial to the long-term health of our entire community," she said in the press release. “Now is not a time to pause or reverse course.”
