Sammy Slade announced in a statement Friday morning that he will not be seeking re-election to the Carrboro Town Council. Slade has served on the council for 14 years.
He said that one of the reasons that he is not seeking re-election is because of the difficulties of mitigating climate change through policy.
"Local government is an institution that operates within the same system and culture which is killing us," he said in his statement. "We need to change that culture if we have any hope of making an actual change in the status quo."
Slade said in the statement that he has served the council "with a love for life and a concern for its continuance."
Slade's announcement comes after Carrboro Mayor Pro Tempore Susan Romaine announced last month that she would not be running again in November and after Damon Seils announced he would also not be running to keep his seat as mayor.
