West Virginia transfer James Okonkwo announced his commitment to the UNC men’s basketball team on Twitter on Thursday. The 6-foot-8 240 pound forward entered the transfer portal following the departure of former West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins and committed to UNC less than a week later.
Okonkwo averaged 2.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and less than one assist per game during the 2022-23 season at West Virginia. He saw action in 31 games and averaged 11 minutes per game. He also led the Mountaineers with 22 total blocks on the season.
Despite his limited minutes at West Virginia, Okonkwo will provide depth at the forward position that the Tar Heels are in need of. The former three-star prospect has two years of eligibility.
Okonkwo is the fifth transfer to commit to the Tar Heels, joining Paxson Wojcik, Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan and Jae’Lyn Withers.
