Updated 9/13/23, 1:58 p.m.: No shots have been fired on UNC's campus, according to a top University official. A man allegedly brandished a gun at Alpine Bagel over an employment-related conflict, the official said.
Police have closed portions of Raleigh Street and South Road near the Student Union.
The suspect is not in police custody. An emergency Alert Carolina update sent at 1:54 p.m. confirmed the shelter-in-place order is still in effect.
Updated 9/13/23, 1:39 p.m.: Some students and faculty report fleeing the Student Union after hearing of an "armed or dangerous person." There are no reports of shots fired at this time. A shelter-in-place order is still in effect.
Updated 9/13/23, 1:22 p.m.: Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools are in "secure mode," according to an email sent by Andy Jenks, chief communications officer for the district. Instruction will continue as normal, but doors will be locked and people will not be allowed in or out.
