As many North Carolinians know, the Triangle is a hotspot for basketball season. On Saturday, March 9, 2024, Durham, North Carolina, will host one of the biggest rivalries in college sports.
However, Cameron Indoor Stadium isn’t the only place to catch some basketball action this weekend. Celebrations of the sport begin a day early, as the famed basketball podcast “One Shining Podcast” heads to Durham on Friday, March 8. Hosted by Tate Frazier, the live recording of the show will take place at the Carolina Theatre of Durham starting at 8 p.m.
“One Shining Podcast” is a show designed to “crack the many mysteries in the world of basketball,” and it covers college basketball, professional basketball and beyond in the ever-changing landscape of sports.
As a part of The Ringer podcast network, “One Shining Podcast” features special guests, including sports analysts and former NBA players, providing insights from news of the Atlantic Coast Conference to the FIFA World Cup.
The episode, live-recorded in Durham, will explore the upcoming UNC-Duke men’s basketball match and the winding down of the college regular season. It will also preview the highly anticipated Selection Sunday for March Madness 2024, on March 17, when the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament teams will be selected.
Frazier, a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, said he was “beyond ecstatic” to be back in the area with the podcast for the big match-up this weekend.
“There’s nothing like the rivalry between North Carolina and Duke,” he said.
Frazier grew up a fan of basketball, especially of the Tar Heels. He pretended he was some of the famed players of the 1993 NCAA championship team with his brother, acting out plays in his living room. This passion for the sport translated to his career as a podcast host, and he’s excited to welcome his family and friends as well as fellow basketball fanatics, to the Carolina Theatre to watch the show in person.
“It’s the best time of the year for true basketball fans,” Frazier said.
Alongside the sport of basketball itself, The Carolina Theatre is a Triangle institution, hosting concerts, comedy shows and movies since 1926. It is also no stranger to hosting live podcast events, including recordings featuring Frazier. Joe Student, senior director of live events at the theatre, described the ambiance of these live podcast events as a “game atmosphere” thanks to the hundreds of enthusiastic fans that pack the venue.
“Our historic venue serves as a perfect setting for live podcast shows,” Student said.
By attending the “One Shining Podcast” live recording event, basketball fans can be at the center of the action of one of the best college basketball podcasts and one of the most anticipated moments of the season.
The excitement doesn’t stop there, though. Attendees should also be prepared for some special guests Frazier and the “One Shining Podcast” crew might bring out during the live-recorded event.
“You never know who might show up,” said Student.
No matter what Frazier has in store, the “One Shining Podcast” live event should be a delight for any fan of the sport to hear key insights and dish the latest news in college basketball as an exciting weekend and March Madness tip-off.
As Student aptly described it, this event is “the best way to pre-game for Saturday” as fans across the area prepare for a thrilling showdown.
