Bonnie Hauser has won the remaining seat on the Orange County Schools Board of Education, winning the runoff election against former Orange County school board member Jennifer Moore on Tuesday.
The original election, which took place in March, resulted in the election of Carrie Doyle and Wendy Padilla, who received the most votes. Though Moore beat Hauser by nearly 500 votes, the winning margin was slim enough to qualify for a runoff election.
Three weeks before the runoff, Moore resigned due to medical issues and later confessed to having lied about having a doctorate degree. In the runoff election, Moore garnered 36 percent of the votes.
Hauser's platform includes academic and compensational support for students and staff, the engagement of stakeholders — parents, teachers and students — and transparency. She has served on the board since 2020 and has been involved with the N.C. public school system for over 10 years.
Hauser was endorsed by Friends of OCS, a political action committee that discourages political conversation in the classroom and emphasizes parents' involvement in education.
Hauser's term will begin on July 1.
