The East Rosemary St. Parking Deck sits on Rosemary St. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024.

UPDATED: A new parking deck on Rosemary Street is on track to open on Aug. 26.

The Town of Chapel Hill is currently putting the finishing touches on the Rosemary Street Parking Deck located at 125 E. Rosemary St.

This deck will eventually replace the parking availability at the James C Wallace Deck, located at 150 E. Rosemary St. However, there is no set date for Wallace Deck’s closure.

The Town acquired the land for the new parking deck through a land swap with Grubb Properties.

Grubb Properties acquired the Wallace Parking Deck, although the Town currently leases the deck and continues to operate it.

The project’s initial projected cost for the project in 2020 was $33.2 million. However, according to a resolution passed by the Chapel Hill Town Council in March, the Town will borrow up to $51 million for the project.

The new parking deck houses approximately 1100 parking spots, the Town of Chapel Hill’s Media Relations Manager Alex Carrasquillo said.

Twenty of those spaces will provide electric vehicle chargers when the deck opens. However, the deck has the capacity to add 60 more charging stations, according to project plans from the Town.

Additionally, 100 spaces in the deck will be reserved for UNC’s new undergraduate admissions building to be built along East Franklin Street, according to project plans from the Town.

The parking deck will also feature an outdoor area for retail, events and art displays.

The Town’s Community Arts and Culture division plans to work with downtown groups and businesses to exhibit public art and provide space for vendors.

Carrasquillo told The Daily Tar Heel in an email that most of the spaces will be hourly public parking, where drivers can pay to park their cars between the hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Off-street public parking rates in downtown Chapel Hill are currently $1.50 per hour. Carrasquillo said the Town will release more information on how to pay as the deck’s opening approaches.
