While the North Carolina football team’s offense thrived the past two years as a high-scoring, high-powered unit, defense was a different story.

UNC ranked 94th nationally in total defense during the 2023 campaign. Even though the Tar Heels put together a 6-0 start, they dropped five of the last seven games, allowing 35.4 points per game in those five losses. Furthermore, North Carolina ranked 90th in rushing defense, giving up just over 163 yards on the ground per game.

North Carolina announced in January that Geoff Collins — the “Minister of Mayhem” — will replace Gene Chizik as defensive coordinator. Collins enters UNC’s program with a wealth of knowledge and 27 years of coaching experience under his belt, including four years as head coach at Georgia Tech.

With a handful of returnees and transfers at his disposal, Collins is looking to reverse North Carolina’s defensive struggles. And, in the absence of star linebacker Cedric Gray, the Tar Heels will turn to experienced veterans at linebacker and on the defensive line to step up in his place.

Here’s a look at some linebackers and defensive linemen who are expected to make an impact this season:

Power Echols

Senior linebacker Power Echols returns to UNC's squad as one of its most valuable defensive pieces. Echols earned Third-Team All-ACC honors during his junior season after posting 102 tackles, ranking him seventh in the ACC. The 6-foot, 225 pound linebacker also recorded 5.5 tackles for loss during last season's campaign.

Echols has big shoes to fill in the absence of Gray, who was selected in the fourth round of the NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans. Gray led UNC in tackles for the past three seasons — with Echols trailing right behind him in the last two years.

Along with graduate rush linebacker Kaimon Rucker, Echols was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List, awarded to the best defensive player of the year.

Desmond Evans

For the first time in his career, defensive lineman Desmond Evans started all 13 games last season as a senior.

Evans was on track for a promising junior year in 2022, tallying 25 tackles through just eight games. His bright start was abbreviated, however, after suffering an injury against Pitt.

In 2023, the senior stepped up, leading all defensive linemen in tackles with 33. The Sanford, North Carolina, native also recorded three sacks, five tackles for loss, seven quarterback pressures and five pass breakups.

As the leader of the defensive linemen, Evans will look to give UNC a much-needed lift in the trenches after placing 10th in the ACC in defense last year.

Beau Atkinson

Last year, defensive lineman Beau Atkinson immediately became a force, collecting 19 tackles in his first true season. In the final regular game of the season, Atkinson made a career-best four tackles against ACC foe N.C. State.

As a proven pass-rusher, ranking third on the team with 3.5 sacks in 2023,North Carolina will rely on the sophomore to continue applying pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Amare Campbell

Amare Campbell, a sophomore from Manassas, Virginia, is slated to move into a much larger role for UNC this season. In his only start of his first year, the linebacker recorded four tackles, a tackle for loss and a quarterback pressure in North Carolina’s loss to West Virginia in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

However, Campbell's status for the season opener against Minnesota is currently unclear following a broken hand.

Joshua Harris

Graduate defensive lineman Joshua Harris is joining UNC’s line after completing stints with both Ole Miss and N.C. State, where he tallied 60 total tackles across five years of experience.

Bringing a wealth of knowledge to North Carolina's defensive unit, Harris has emerged as a new leader and adds to the depth of the line.
