UNC graduate student forward Martin Vician (9) and graduate student midfielder/forward Quenzi Huerman (11) celebrate the team’s second goal during the third round of the NCAA men’s division one soccer tournament against Hofstra on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, at Dorrance Field. UNC wins 2-2 (Carolina advances on penalty kicks, 5-3).

The No. 6 North Carolina men’s soccer team (1-0) defeated Alabama Birmingham (0-1), 1-0, in a close away match to open the season.

The Tar Heels had no answer for sophomore forward Humphrey Doh during the match.

As the game started, UAB lined up with five players in the midfield. The midfield condensed the space, preventing any Tar Heel players from creating offensive chances.

The Blazers slowly advanced as the Tar Heels were forced to either sit back and defend as UAB gradually advanced or press.

Throughout the game, Doh showcased his quick first step and challenged the Tar Heels to stay in front when he had open space on the sidelines.

To amplify this, Doh’s strike partner, sophomore forward Tony Kim, pushed high into Tar Heel territory, standing a step before the backline.

As Doh moved to the sideline, UNC was forced to split its defensive responsibilities. Kim sprang through the gaps of the backline and a had a clear chance at the net.

Senior defender Andrew Czech was often isolated on the wing with Doh. In the 19th minute, Czech was forced to make a stern challenge to prevent Doh from utilizing the space, fouling him in the process.

The Tar Heels' frustration was mounting as first-year defender Tate Johnson received a yellow card for dissent in the 36th minute.

In the first minute of the second half, junior defender Charlie Harper received a yellow card for a poor challenge on Kim immediately after senior forward Luke Hillie got a yellow card for his challenge on UAB first-year defender Mathis Richter.

By the 58th minute, UNC had accumulated five yellow cards, forcing the Tar Heels to play more carefully throughout the second half.

During the 70th minute, UAB's first-year Ole Jessen and graduate forward Martin Vician battled for possession, pushing each other to the ground. Vician was awarded the penalty and he smoothly struck the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal to put UNC ahead.

Despite Johnson's ejection in the 80th minute, the Tar Heels closed the match with a 1-0 victory, claiming their first win of the season.

UNC play its next regular season match on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. against California Baptist University for the first home game of the season.
