The UNC Student Stores stands on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023. UNC Student Employees across campus are advocating for higher wages.

For students seeking on-campus employment at UNC, it can be difficult to know where to look.

UNC Campus Recreation, Carolina Housing, UNC Transportation and Parking, UNC Libraries and the Carolina Union routinely hire students for part-time positions.

Handshake, a platform offered by University Career Services, allows students to search and filter through all up-to-date listings in one place. Specific information about open positions and applications can also be found on respective organization websites.

Any student is eligible to work on campus if they are enrolled at least part-time in an undergraduate or graduate program, but status can fluctuate between semesters. Before applying to work, students should review the criteria on UNC’s Student Employment website.

For qualifying students, Work-Study positions are offered across campus. Students can review the requirements on the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid website and browse opportunities on UNC Work-Study JobX

Facility Operations Coordinator for Campus Recreation Lauren Bontrager said that Campus Recreation is looking to hire 10 to 30 students.

Campus Recreation began their hiring cycle for the fall semester in April and will start hiring for the spring semester in November. Students may work at the Recreation Center's front desk, lead expeditions and run intramural and club sports.

Bontrager said the department wants employees who strive to facilitate well-being, equity, inclusion and engagement.

“We really try to give people the ability to take in these unique skills that they learn here but also translate them into what their field is going to be once they graduate,” she said.

Carolina Dining Services said in a written statement to The Daily Tar Heel that they are looking to hire many students with great attitudes, friendly smiles and an eagerness to learn.

CDS said the hiring process was going well, writing that they currently have the most openings in the UNC Dining Halls for cashier, baker, food service and utility positions, along with having vacancies in retail locations including Chick-fil-A, Subway and Port City Java.

For students interested in creative spaces, Carolina Performing Arts is actively hiring usher, production and ticket service staff.

Audience Services Employee and UNC senior MK Ware said that working with Performing Arts is a great way to make friends through a common interest while also having flexible hours.

“If you want to learn more about performing arts and expand your understanding of what that may mean to you or what it traditionally means, work at CPA,” she said.

Outside of University departments, other on-campus jobs, including SafeWalk, are hiring.

SafeWalk is a student-run, University-sponsored organization that works closely with UNC Police. The group provides escorted walks on request from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.

SafeWalk is hiring employees who can walk and bike several miles nightly.

Shelby Fernandez, a UNC sophomore and SafeWalker, said working with SafeWalk helped her get very familiar with the layout of UNC’s campus.

Fernandez said working with SafeWalk is the best on-campus job she could have chosen. She said the staff is very diverse, with students from many majors and campus groups, and that the hours are the best thing about her job. She said the late shifts work well for night owls.

“You get to learn a lot about other people’s experiences at Carolina because no one person at SafeWalk is the same stereotype,” Fernandez said.

Students seeking employment can attend the Part-Time Job Fair on Thursday, August 29 in the Student Union’s Great Hall from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. On and off-campus organizations will be tabling.
