Cowgirl boots, crochet and Carolina Blue: UNC football fans show out for first home game
On Saturday, UNC-Chapel Hill students packed into the Gate 5 entrance of Kenan Stadium to get into the student section at this season’s home opener against the UNC-Charlotte 49ers.
For some, going and seeing the game is fun on its own, but many students use game days to show off their style and Tar Heel pride.
The Daily Tar Heel asked fans what they were wearing to the game, and why:
Trilla Teague went to the student gate in bedazzled cream-colored cowgirl boots and a denim dress. She said she got the boots for Christmas her senior year of high school and that they are the best gift she has ever received.
“Number one pair of shoes I own, easily,” she said.
Teague also expressed excitement and anticipation over the return to football season. She said that she was pumped about getting to cheer for the Tar Heels again.
Junior Catherine Campo wore a gradient blue, handmadecrocheted top. She said it took her a while to get started making the top, but only six hours once she was determined to finish it.
“I actually started it last summer, but I didn't finish it until this past spring break,” she said. “So I’m very excited I get to wear it today.”
One of Campo’s friends, fellow junior Leah Vasbinder, showed her school spirit not just with her clothes, but also her makeup. Her bright blue eyeliner is normally the centerpiece of her game day outfits, she said.
Vasbinder also said she was excited for the football season. Despite the heat, she said the game was going to be worth it.
“I don’t know how the team’s gonna be, but I’m just here for a good time,” she said.
Sophomore Cameron Wheeler was also thrilled to be at the game and back in the stadium. He was wearing a bucket hat that he got at a women’s soccer game in the spring.
“I miss Kenan,” he said. “I had such a good time almost every game last year, so it feels good to be back here.”
Senior Dylan Stoneshowed up with a fuzzy purse and graphic t-shirt. They also were excited about their last first home game.
“It’s my last one, basically, it’s one of my last ones so I’m obsessed,” they said.
