Chapel Hill storefront coming Spring, 2025
For Lara Patterson, achieving an even, chemical-free tan in college at UNC was a dream far out
of reach. As an undergraduate, she used self-tanner because she worried about harming her skin
in a tanning bed.
Now, there is finally a professional tanning salon in Chapel Hill that does not damage skin with
UV exposure or harmful chemicals.
On Aug. 28, Patterson and her husband Bruce opened the second franchise of goGLOW, a vegan
spray tanning salon, in Chapel Hill. The store is currently located in a salon suite at Mina’s
Studio in the Galleria Mall with plans to move to a Chapel Hill storefront in the spring. The first
location of the franchise is in Winston-Salem, where the couple lives, but Patterson said her time
at UNC— where three of the couple’s five children have attended— inspired the opening of a
Chapel Hill salon.
UNC students, residents of Chapel Hill and anyone looking for a natural tan can purchase a
monthly Founding goGLOW membership for $36, which includes a monthly service at any
goGLOW location and a discount on skin products.
Taking care of her skin has always been a priority for Patterson, but she said it felt like she had
to sacrifice that in order to be tan. With goGLOW, you do not have to choose. The spray tan formula contains caffeine to tighten skin, hyaluronics to plump skin and apple stem cells to help
stop wrinkles.
“It's full of good, healthy stuff for your skin, which is different from a lot of the other spray tans
out there.”
GoGLOW offers two types of tans: the regular rinse, which is left on for 12 hours, and the rapid
rinse, which can be washed off after three to six hours. Both tans take 24 hours to fully develop.
The salon also offers packages such as the new client service, which comes with a pH neutral
cleanser and an exfoliating mitt. Complementary products are available at goGLOW salons to
extend the tan and hydrate skin.
GoGLOW spray tans are airbrushed by hand to avoid the streaking and uneven appearance that
often comes with machine-administered spray tans. Patterson said that her tans from goGLOW
leave her feeling sun-kissed and hydrated.
“It's like a skin treatment, which I love,” Patterson said. “So every time I get a GLOW, my skin
looks younger, firmer, plumper. It just looks healthy—and I know I'm doing something good for
my skin.”
The company originated in Minneapolis and its franchise stores are quickly spreading across the
country. Patterson said she and her husband plan to open more goGLOW locations in North
Carolina soon, including a flagship store in the Raleigh area.
“The tagline for goGLOW is ‘we've outsmarted the sun’ because there's just no reason to tan in
the sun anymore,” she said. “We know what it does to you.”
