Column: Joe Rogan and Elon Musk's election influence define the true value of X

The 2024 U.S presidential election introduced an unconventional approach that reshaped the landscape of public opinion in favor of Donald Trump: Elon Musk. Musk's impact was multifaceted, blending substantial financial contributions, direct voter engagement through his social media platform and a strong physical presence at campaign rallies.

At the same time, Joe Rogan's widely trusted platform offered listeners a fresh take on the political narrative, slowly but surely nudging public sentiment toward Trump's campaign. Together, their efforts exemplified a modern blueprint for influencing elections in an age dominated by digital reach and personalized engagement.

Musk's support began with significant financial backing, injecting over $119 million into America PAC, a super political action committee he founded with the purpose of supporting Trump's campaign. This contribution provided the campaign with the resources to launch widespread voter outreach initiatives and mobilize efforts in critical battleground states. At the same time, Musk's surprise appearances at rallies in these key states drew immense crowds, with attendees eager to see the tech icon endorse a candidate many of them already supported.

However, Musk's involvement extended far beyond just writing checks and visiting rallies. Using  X, which he owns, he launched an unprecedented voter engagement campaign. The campaign included a daily $1 million sweepstakes for voters participating in the election, which critics saw as dangerously close to election interference and even bribery.

A report from The Washington Post's Aaron Blake noted that Musk's actions raised questions about the integrity of electoral engagement by offering financial incentives that blurred the line between encouraging participation and manipulating voter behavior. The sweepstakes set a problematic standard by using financial rewards to potentially sway voters, sparking heated debate over the role of money in electoral influence.

Similarly, “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast played an equally potent role in shifting public opinion. Unlike Musk's high-stakes approach, Rogan's discussions, which covered everything from censorship on social media to the flaws of the political establishment, created a platform where Trump's policies were digested thoughtfully rather than through quick soundbites. This gradual persuasion contributed to a grassroots growth of support among undecided voters who had grown disillusioned with traditional political narratives.

NBC News said on election night that many college students in Arizona cited Rogan's interview with Trump as a critical influence.

“It's been surprising how often the topic of the Joe Rogan podcast keeps coming up,” anchor Gadi Schwartz said. “We've talked to several students now who say that they listened to that podcast with the former president and that was the deciding factor for them.”

The dual influence of Musk and Rogan in the 2024 election paints a picture of the power in sustained, personalized engagement. While traditional endorsements by politicians or celebrities often felt detached, Musk took a bolder approach, mixing financial backing with thinly veiled bribes to shift public opinion. His sweepstakes-driven engagement campaign brought a new kind of immediacy that caught the attention of his 200 million followers, and it sparked ethical debates along the way.

Rogan, on the other hand, built a different kind of loyalty through his podcast, which appealed to many undecided voters by exploring political topics with a relatable, no-nonsense approach. Together, Musk and Rogan created a groundswell of support through platforms that signaled a shift in how public figures wield influence — no longer merely distant endorsers, but active shapers of political dialogue.

And now that Elon Musk is cozying up in family photos with Trump, we can only speculate if the next four years might just see him swapping his MAGA hat for something shinier. As we prepare for a Trump presidency, one thing is certain: Musk and Rogan have not only left their mark on the 2024 race, but may have also set a precedent for a new era of digital-driven, personal-brand politics in America.
