The Daily Tar Heel

Hi Professor,

I'm sorry to bother you, but I wanted to take a minute to talk to you about my grade on Midterm 2. As you know, my performance on this exam was less than stellar. I want to begin this email by taking responsibility for my grade and assuring you that I will be devoting a lot more time to this class for future exams.

However, I wanted to discuss with you the possibility of a retake or potential extra credit points.  I have been dealing with a lot of unforeseen and difficult circumstances lately, and I wanted to discuss them with you.

As you may know, this past weekend was Halloweekend. As a senior in college, this felt like a really monumental experience for me. It is not everyday as a college student that we get to drink senselessly and pretend to be people we are not. For this reason, I felt that it was important for me to fully immerse myself in this holiday. As such, I spent a lot of time preparing my costumes.

So much time, in fact, that I ended up spending a lot of class time online shopping in order to secure the best outfit. While I understand that this may seem disrespectful, I want to assure you that this was not the case. Regardless, because of the extensive amount of time I spent shopping during class, I missed a lot of notes. I feel that this prohibited me from being able to study effectively as I had no in-class material to go off of. Not only did I miss crucial notes, but I had to spend a ton of time outside of class heading to the package center instead of going to the library.

Furthermore, I was also unable to study for this exam because of an incident that occurred on the review day you hosted. One of the websites that I bought my costume off of, SHEIN, emailed me to notify me that my shipment had been delayed. I'm sure you can understand how shocking this was to me — I had spent a month planning the perfect $7 outfit, only to be informed that it would not arrive on time.

When I realized this, I was forced to miss your review session so that I could go to the mall and buy the necessary parts for my costume. This was incredibly stressful. My roommate and I had been planning on going as slutty Mordecai and Rigby from Regular Show, and she would have been left hanging if I did not pull through.

As you can see, the circumstances surrounding this exam were very difficult for me. I don't want to pull the mental health card, but my anxiety was definitely at an all time high. In regards to the exam itself, I am sad to say that I was not set up for success because of ongoing factors. The exam was the day after Halloween, and the night before, I decided to go out anyway.

In all fairness, I decided that I would only go out for a little bit. I wanted to make sure I got home on time to get enough sleep before the exam. However, while I was out, I received a text from my situationship, John John. As soon as I responded he stopped texting me back, which was really confusing for me. Unfortunately, this put me in an even worse state for the exam.

My roommate reminded me that at the end of the day, we are all just tiny specks floating on a giant rock in space. After giving this some thought, I decided it was important for me to prioritize having fun over a meaningless test. After downing several vodka sours, I can honestly say there was just no way I was going to pass your exam.

I am very sorry for the length of this email, but I wanted to try and explain to you why exactly I did so poorly. I want to earnestly ask that you consider this difficult situation and provide leniency in regards to my exam score. Thank you in advance.
