UNC junior midfielder Sam Williams (7) advances the ball toward the goal during the home opener against California Baptist on Sunday, August 25, 2024. The game ended in a scoreless draw, 0-0.

The No. 11 ranked Tar Heels (9-2-5, 4-2-2 ACC), fell, 1-0, to Boston College (5-4-7, 0-4-4 ACC) at Dorrance Field on Friday Evening.

Boston College launched the ball at kickoff into Tar Heel territory, sending its whole front line forward. Sophomore midfielder Marco Dos Santos quickly dribbled through the defined area before junior defender Charlie Harper erased the danger with a diving tackle.

After their initial attack, the Eagles pulled back, forming two lines of defenders inside their 18-yard box. As the Tar Heels advanced the ball, Boston College remained compact, forcing UNC to recycle the ball back toward its defense.

UNC maintained possession but could not break down Boston College’s defense in the early parts of the first half.

The Tar Heels had their first goal-scoring opportunity after senior midfielder Juan Caffaro won his team a corner. Junior midfielder Sam Williams drove in a direct cross at the head of graduate defender Riley Thomas. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Brennen Klein saved the shot, ending the UNC attack.

Boston College quickly struck back as junior defender Christian Bejar made an overlapping run down the sidelines. Bejar’s shot barely missed the left post, flying out of bounds.

With 15 minutes left in the first half, UNC caught the Eagles’s defense sleeping and launched the ball across the field to sophomore Tate Lorentz.

Lorentz sent in a low cross past the legs of sophomore defender Mortiz Gundelach. The ball landed at the feet of junior defender Parker O'Ferral, who shot wide and over the top left corner.

After halftime, the Tar Heels immediately went on the offensive, playing a series of quick passes down the right sidelines, allowing senior midfielder Andrew Czech to launch a shot toward the bottom right corner of the Boston College goal.

The Tar Heels won a corner 53 mins. After the cross, the ball reached senior forward Luke Hillie. His shot deflected out toward the edge of the box, where senior midfielder Matthew Acosta volleyed the ball towards the bottom corner. Graduate defender Marc Boyce deflected the ball off his chest before a teammate cleared the ball out.

Midway through the second half, the Eagle broke through the initial line.

Acousta's slide missed the ball, receiving a yellow card to give Boston College a free kick on the edge of the box. Junior forward Ask Ekeland lined up over the free kick. Ekeland launched a high-curling pass, which graduate defender Riley Thomas knocked the ball out of the air and away from the goal.

In the match's dying minutes, sophomore midfielder Jack Burkhardt played the ball into the middle to redshirt sophomore Marci Kileen. The redshirt spotted the goalkeeper, shifting to his right and launched a shot with the outside of his boot toward the right corner’s upper 90.

Killeen’s shot banged off the bottom of the crossbar, sealing the victory for Boston College 1-0.

This match concludes UNC'sregular season. The ACC playoffs will begin on Nov. 6.
