After the firing of head coach Mack Brown last Tuesday, the UNC football program named Freddie Kitchens interim head coach on Sunday afternoon. Kitchens has served as run game coordinator and tight ends coach under Brown for the past two seasons.
Kitchens joined North Carolina in February 2023, after a season with South Carolina as a Senior Football Analyst and a 16-year stint in the NFL, including a season as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
“Freddie Kitchens is an incredibly talented coach who is respected by our student-athletes and staff,’’ Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said in a press release. “He is dedicated to doing all he can to help lead our program through this transition, and we appreciate his willingness to take on this role.”
Sunday marks Brown's final day as head coach. Brown coached his last game at North Carolina on Saturday, culminating in a 35-30 loss to N.C. State at Kenan Stadium.
The Tar Heels earned a 6-6 record this season and are bowl eligible. UNC awaits for its bowl game selection.
