The Carrboro Town Council met on Jan. 21 to discuss a special use permit for the South Green project.
What’s new?
- The Drakeford Library Complex’s grand opening will be held on Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. It will include a ribbon cutting ceremony and open tours for the public.
- Community members expressed concern about traffic patterns in the Drakeford Library Complex area. An extension of Maple Avenue has been changed to a one-way road heading South, which neighborhood residents described as confusing and inconvenient.
- “It's hard not to notice how this is concentrating traffic into the wrong direction and really funneling traffic into our neighborhood,” community member Brad Bonneville said.
- The council held a public hearing for consideration of a special use permit for the South Green mixed use project, which involves four properties on Two Hills Drive.
- Development Review Administrator Marty Roupe gave a presentation about the project plans and the site owner’s request to change previously approved elements of lot 2 of the project.
- Many community members expressed concerns about noise and privacy.
- “Me and my wife don’t know what to do when those [noise control] conditions aren’t met,” community member Tommy Koonce said. “I appreciate calling the police, but calling the police on the grease recycle truck that comes regularly at 5:58 [a.m.] doesn't feel like a good use of resources.”
What decisions were made?
- The council decided to postpone the project approval to allow Town staff to update the conditions so that they reflect the concerns expressed by community members.
What’s next?
- The council will meet for a regular meeting on Feb. 4 at the Carrboro Town Hall at 6 p.m.
