Word on the Street: What's your New Year's resolution?

UNC Campus Recreation Health Resources
The UNC Campus Recreation Center provides weekly fitness and wellness classes for students to engage with their bodies and minds. These classes are wellness resources that are utilized by many students on campus. A yoga class is pictured on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022.

New Year's resolutions: a staple of the most excruciating FDOC small talk you’ve ever had, but also an opportunity to reinvent yourself. If you stick to them, that is.

Grace Wilkinson, junior media and journalism, communication studies double major

”My New Year's resolution was to get my money up and my weight down. And by that, I just mean I just need to work out because all I do is sit around, and I love to watch TV, but it's time to just start watching TV on the treadmill. And I need to get a job at some point in my life.”

Sophia Hunt, junior psychology, dramatic arts double major

“My main resolution is to strengthen the relationships that I have in my life with my friends and family, and I do think that I'll be successful in that because, duh, I have amazing friends and family and I'm really grateful for them all.”

Maya Hagan, senior political science, media and journalism double major

“One New Year’s resolution I have for 2025 is to eat out less and cook more at home. I also want to be more social as well — start talking to new people, meet new friends and be more productive on the weekends.”

Olivia Chester, senior media and journalism major

“My New Year’s resolution was to stop using AI in my assignments because I read up over break how bad it is for our environment because of how much water it’s using, so I’m trying to cut back on my AI usage.”

Sydney Brainard, senior media and journalism major

“I always set myself a book, like, ‘I want to read this many books this year,’ which I think I've been doing pretty good on because I'm already on my second book and it's only the first eight days of the new year.”

Joseph Macia, senior political science, media and journalism double major

“My New Year's resolution is to continue with my goal on my physical journey of making sure I'm eating right, going to the gym almost every day and just taking care of my body the best way I possibly can.”

Emaan Hashi, senior information science major

“ This is gonna sound so silly, but I want to have stronger knees this year. My knees just aren't that strong.”

“I think I will be successful. There's just a lot of motivation for you to have stronger knees because there's many practical applications.”

Annie DeGuzman, sophomore psychology major

“My main one is to make time to do artistic hobbies, because I think I stopped doing that when I'm in classes.”

Amanda Abreu, junior data science, media and journalism double major

“I think my main New Year's resolution was that I wanted to be more creative this year. I felt like last year I did a lot of professional work and really focused on my academics, but I want to express myself more creatively and I want to take care of myself more holistically. I want to do more yoga, cook for myself, eat more whole foods."

Cindy Xu, senior information science, music double major

“ Oh, this one is really stupid. It's everyone's, but it's to go to the gym more, but also it's to keep my room clean because I feel like when my room is cleaner, my mind is cleaner and my room always ends up being a mess by the end of the semester.”
