The UNC men’s basketball team (8-6, 1-1 ACC) fell to Louisville (9-5, 2-1 ACC), 83-70, on Wednesday evening in the KFC Yum Center, leading to the Tar Heels first loss in the ACC.

Despite finding their offensive flow in the second half and crafting a response, UNC was unable to overcome the deficit due to defensive lapses and foul trouble. A late push to overcome the deficit fell just short thanks to late errors, resulting in the Cardinals’ first win over the Tar Heels since 2020 fueled by a 22-9 to close out the game. Louisville guard Chucky Hepburn scored 26 points with 19 coming in the second half.

Both teams traded baskets to begin the game. Louisville forward Noah Waterman started off with five early points giving the Cardinals a 5-2 lead.

The Tar Heels finally broke through offensively with back-to-back driving layups by first-year forward Drake Powell and first-year guard Ian Jackson – cutting the Cardinals’ early five point lead to one.

Neither team could buy a basket for the next two minutes before Louisville rattled off a 5-0 run capped off by an and-1 layup by Louisville guard Reyne Smith with fourteen minutes to go.

On the ensuing possession, junior forward Ven-Allen Lubin found Jackson open who drained the Tar Heels’ first 3-pointer of the game. Lubin then snatched the ball on a faulty pass and found Powell in transition, who converted on a pullup jumper to tie the game, 12-12.

A back-and-forth ensued to characterize the last half of the first 20.

With 10 minutes remaining, junior forward Cade Tyson drained a wide open 3-pointer to give the Tar Heels their first lead of the game, 15-14, but it didn't last long.

A slick turnaround jumper by Louisville guard J’Vonne Hadley on the next possession kicked off a 7-0 run for the Cardinals. Smith converted on two 3-pointers in the following minute to put Louisville up 24-18 with 7:28 remaining.

Graduate guard RJ Davis cashed in for his first basket of the game with five minutes to go in the first. He fired off five consecutive points, cutting the lead to 30-27 with three minutes remaining.

Despite Davis’ attempts to overtake the Louisville lead – the Cardinals continued to respond thanks to success in infiltrating the Tar Heel’s interior defense.

Each side suffered from a drought to end the half. An exchange of free throws in the final two minutes saw the Cardinals hold a 37-31 lead going into the locker room. Davis led UNC with nine points to keep the deficit under double digits.

Immediately out of the half, Jackson drove through contact for a quick layup. Each team traded baskets for the first minute of the half before Hepburn rattled off six points to extend the Louisville lead to eight, 43-35.

Louisville forward James Scott overtook the UNC defense for back-to-back alley-oop dunks, and guard Khani Rooths drained a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals a double digit lead, 51-40, with 15:34 to go

Powell and Jackson then took over for the Tar Heels, combining for all of UNC’s seven points over the next two minutes.

A three-minute scoring drought by the Cardinals kept the door open for the Tar Heels to take control. Davis drove through contact for the and-1 layup, swishing the free throw to cut the lead to three with 9:44 to go.

Davis found Jackson open on the wing for the 61-61 equalizer with 8:37 remaining. A flurry of makes ensued. Smith instantly hit a transition 3-pointer to retake a 64-61 lead.

Another bout of free throws continued, before Davis snatched a pass and found Jackson in transition for the and-1 layup to cut the deficit to 70-69 with five minutes remaining.

Louisville set off on a 6-0 run after another lengthy scoring drought, after Hepburn drained three free throws off of a Lubin foul and found Smith open on the wing to extend the lead to 76-69. A Lubin turnover sealed the game for the Cardinals.

The comeback effort came just short for the Tar Heels as Louisville pulled away to a 83-70 lead in the final minutes.

The Tar Heels will look to bounce back on their ACC road trip as they head to South Bend, Indiana on Saturday to take on Notre Dame at noon.
