Peel Gallery's 'Best in Show' exhibition brings paws-itive energy to Carrboro

Artwork and cards from "Best In Show," a dog-themed art exhibition fundraiser, are on display at Peel Gallery in Carrboro on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2024. Proceeds benefit Hope Animal Rescue and Peel Gallery.

Situated on the border between Chapel Hill and Carrboro, Peel Gallery is a vibrant store and space that hosts exhibitions for local artists. Through January, the gallery hosted “Best in Show,” an exhibition and fundraiser for Triangle-based Hope Animal Rescue. Submissions were centered around a simple theme: dogs!

To end the month and subsequently the exhibition, Peel Gallery hosted an adoption event on Sunday to bridge the connection between Hope Animal Rescue and the showcased art. Initially, the adoption event was slated for Jan. 10, but it was postponed due to weather.

Artists from in and around the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area submitted pieces, from sculptures to oil paintings, of dogs. With such a broad theme, artists drew on personal interests and connections to contribute to the community-wide project.

Lauren Bass is a contributing local artist and dog lover who worked with Hope Animal Rescue prior to the January exhibition. Bass also volunteers with the owner of the gallery, Lindsey Metivier. She said she had wanted to get involved in Peel Gallery, and this exhibition was her chance.

Bass worked with acrylic paint for her submission and was inspired to make something in commemoration of her late rescue dog. The painting is based on Michelangelo's “The Creation of Adam.” Two paws — one representing her late rescue and the other of her current dog — reach toward each other against a blue background.

Bass said she hopes “Best in Show” promotes the rescuing and fostering of dogs.

“People can come and be inspired by the artwork that’s there — and maybe adopt a puppy,” Bass said.

Karen Melton fosters with Hope Animal Rescue and volunteered on Sunday at the event.

“We love getting out in the community and letting our dogs meet people and get good socialization in, and hopefully finding their forever home,” Melton said.

Melton said Hope Animal Rescue has participated at other events at places such as breweries, but getting to work with an art gallery in Carrboro was especially unique.

The event took place in the main gallery space, with fenced areas for puppies to play so that visitors could both admire the art and obsess over adorable dogs.

Mer Haggerty is an artist participating in the exhibition. Her artwork depicts shadows of dogs — dark geometric figures in white backgrounds — placed in repurposed frames.

“I love [Peel] Gallery and space, so I participate as much as I can,” Haggerty said. “And I love dogs. I have a dog, and I love Hope Rescue, so this was just my dream event.”

Haggerty also has a permanent drawer at Peel, a storage space the gallery provides artists when they have interested buyers that want to see more of their work. Haggerty intends to give some of the money earned from her pieces to Hope Rescue.

Adam D. Cohen is a local artist who was buying art from Peel when he heard about the exhibition. Cohen already had a painting of a dog, and he decided to make a print giclée — a high-quality reproduction of an original art — with it.

“It was a great two causes in one — between the rescue shelter and the gallery itself — so I jumped on the chance to be involved,” Cohen said.

Cohen said Peel Gallery is a gift to the artistic community, and it offers not only a great venue for art, but a gathering space for the Carrboro community.

“[The adoption event] is certainly in keeping with their ethos of supporting the community at large,” Cohen said.
