UNC graduate infielder Hunter Stokely swings at homeplate on Tuesday, Feb. 18 against the Kansas State Wildcats.

Riding comebacks in the first and seventh innings, the No. 6 Diamond Heels (4-0) bested Kansas State (1-4), 12-9, on Tuesday evening at Boshamer Stadium.

UNC scored four runs in the first and five in the seventh to bookend a gritty defeat of the Wildcats. Sophomore catcher Luke Stevenson tallied three RBIs and his first stolen base of the season to maintain North Carolina’s unblemished record.

“We've managed to go 4-0 without a ton of home runs, not a ton of doubles, some doubles, but we've got some big hits in big situations,” head coach Scott Forbes said.

Sophomore pitcher Folger Boaz started the afternoon with an immediate strikeout. After the Wildcats recorded two hits, Kansas State left fielder Keegan O’Connor walked walked with bases loaded to put the Wildcats up 1-0. Maximus Martin avoided a third strike by rocketing a left-field single for a second straight run.

Down 2-0, the Tar Heels rallied for four runs thanks to Kansas State errors in the bottom of the first.

With two bases loaded, junior outfielder Rom Kellis fired off a strike to right field to give graduate outfielder Tyson Bass the first UNC run of the day.

Sophomore catcher Luke Stevenson knotted the score after an error off a hit by designated hitter Sam Angelo, and graduate infielder Alex Madera found contact to left field after just two plays to give Kellis the score. A sac fly by sophomore infielder Gavin Gallaher off the cuff gave UNC a 4-2 lead.

“We're just all trying to put good swings on balls, and every time that there's a runner in a scoring position, we're doing everything we can to score them,” Stevenson said.

Boaz recorded two strikeouts on three hitters to kick off the second, going three up, three down. Angelo launched a deep hit into the outfield, but Martin secured the catch to force an exchange of possession with two runners on for the Tar Heels.

A solo homer by Kansas State’s Martin in the fourth chipped into the UNC lead, 4-3. After taking over the mound in the third, junior pitcher Cameron Padgett recorded back-to-back strikeouts of the season to end the Wildcats’ run.

After a slow fifth, Kansas State took a 5-4 lead after catcher Cayden Phillips executed a bunt that caused an error from junior pitcher Kyle Percival, sending two Wildcats to the home plate. Stevenson responded with an RBI the same inning, sneaking a right single past the glove of a Kansas State outfielder for the 5-5 equalizer by junior outfielder Kane Kepley.

In the top of the seventh, Kansas State snuck a single between two Tar Heels to give the Wildcats a 6-5 advantage after a bunt play left a runner on second.

After relinquishing the lead, a five-run inning brought North Carolina back.

Graduate first baseman Hunter Stokely released a quick line drive to the left baseline for the score by senior infielder Jackson Van De Brake to tie. With bases loaded, Bass popped a single up the middle for the double to give the Tar Heels a two-point lead. Stevenson then found open space in right field with runners perched on second and third. UNC led, 10-6.

The Wildcats answered with three runs to cut the deficit to one, 10-9, after third baseman Dee Kennedy recorded a fourth hit for a double and his own run off of a Van de Brake error. Junior pitcher Matthew Matthijs struck out Kansas State’s English swinging to end the deluge.

UNC responded with its own outpouring of runs. Waiting on third, redshirt junior outfielder Reece Holbrook scored on a fly ball from Madera. Gallaher stepped up and recorded his first hit and RBI of the season for a Van De Brake run, extending the lead to 12-9.

“We were so happy for him. That was just a great moment for him,” Madera said. “He actually said something in the locker room, he was like, ‘I finally got my first barrel’ so, you know, it's good for him to get out there.”

Matthijs added two more strikeouts in the ninth to secure the victory.

The Diamond Heels will head to Greenville, N.C. on Friday to take on ECU at 5 p.m.
