UNC senior forward/center Maria Gakdeng (5) heads back to the bench during the women’s basketball game against Florida in the Spectrum Center on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024. UNC won 77-57.

The No. 9 UNC women’s basketball (24-4, 12-3 ACC) bested Syracuse (10-16, 4-11 ACC), 68-58, in New York on Thursday night without the presence of leading scorer Alyssa Ustby who did not travel with the team to Syracuse after sustaining an injury on Sunday.

Senior forward Maria Gakdeng led with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Only three Tar Heels reached double digits during the match.

The National Women’s Honoree of the Week guard Reniya Kelly started the game right where she left off with a layup to open scoring for the Tar Heels. Graduate Guard Lexi Donarksi followed with a three of her own.

North Carolina struggled to hold onto the ball, committing three early turnovers, giving the Orange the opportunity to convert down low.

Graduate guard Grace Townsend picked the team up with a strong move to the hole after a four minute scoring drought for the Tar Heels.

Junior guard Trayanna Crisp knocked down a three to end the first quarter and put North Carolina up three.

Gakdeng posted up her defender on the block and spun to her right to put away her bucket of the game. She followed with another layup.

However, the Tar Heels struggled to stop Syracuse’s Georgia Woolley who hit double digits with back-to-back triples.

The Tar Heels failed to convert on two breakaway opportunities with layup misses from Crisp and junior guard Indya Nivar.

But, they were picked up by Gakdeng who’s layups and foul shots lead to a 9-0 run for North Carolina.

Gakdeng scored 15 points in the second quarter and the Tar Heels went into half up 35-25.

Gakdeng opened the scoring in the second half once again, posting up her defender for an easy layup. Forward Ciera Toomey knocked down a three from the top of the key and the Tar Heels went up 15.

The Orange didn’t back down and continued to put away shots from behind the arch to close the scoring gap and put them within five. The Orange went 6 for 6 from three to start the third quarter and go on a 9-0 run.

Nivar ended the scoring drought for the Tar Heels with two foul shots and Townsend followed with a layup of her own.

Donarksi hit a three to end the quarter and put the Tar Heels up 10. First-year Lanie Grant got her first points of the game with a mid range jumper.

Donarksi hit yet another three to extend a 7-0 run for North Carolina to extend its lead to 13.

The Tar Heels were able to hold onto their lead and secure the win.

North Carolina will travel to Louisville on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. to take on the Cardinals.
