UNC softball comes together before a no-hit inning during the softball game against Queens on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025, at Anderson Field. UNC won 4-0.

The North Carolina softball team (21-4, 3-0 ACC) defeated Pittsburgh (10-13, 0-3 ACC), 8-4, on Sunday afternoon at Anderson Softball Stadium.

UNC escaped a late scare from the Panthers to complete a sweep of their first ACC series of the year. The key for North Carolina was its nine strikeouts, keeping Pitt under control for most of the afternoon.

“It was nice to see the staff work together, we trust them fully when they’re out there,” graduate designated player Kiannah Pierce said. “To have Kenna to go that long after throwing a complete game, to see Britton come in and shut them down, there was never a doubt that the pitchers had the game in control the whole time”

Making her 13th start of the season, junior right-handed pitcher Kenna Raye Dark got the game started for the Tar Heels. Other than a single, it was smooth sailing for UNC early as they got three easy outs.

In the bottom of the first inning, North Carolina opened the scoring with a homer blasted to center field from graduate second baseman Kat Rodriguez.

Dark got her second strikeout of the day against the first batter in the top of the second, and after another Pitt single, she got her third to close out the half-inning.

Pitt’s pitching struggles started to show in the bottom of the second, as two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Tar Heels. UNC failed to capitalize, as a line out and a fly out left all three runners stranded.

Dark had her share of struggles as she hit two batters in a row after her fourth strikeout, escaping the inning unscathed after a ground out left two Panther runners on base.

Rodriguez’s second hit of the game was a single that earned her an RBI following an errant Pitt throw that allowed junior left fielder Lexie Roberts to score an unearned run.

UNC's third run of the afternoon came courtesy of the Panther center fielder smacking into the wall, jarring graduate designated player Kiannah Pierce’s hit out of her glove, allowing Rodriguez to trot home.

“She’s just steady,” head coach Megan Smith Lyon said about Kiannah Pierce’s play thus far this season. “She’s a team player, so she’s not trying to swing for the fence, she’s not trying for the flash. She just wants to put the ball in play and score runs.”

Pitt’s first extra-base hit didn't come until the top of the fifth — a ball that bounced off the center field wall and through a UNC glove.

The Tar Heels added to their lead with a two run homer from sophomore center fielder Sanaa Thompson, her fourth of the year. It was 5-0 in favor of North Carolina.

The bats were officially hot as sophomore catcher Raeghan Carlson’s hit bounced off the left field wall, nearly making it to the foul pole, forcing a long throw from the Panthers which allowed Pierce to run home, making it 6-0 Tar Heels.

Two walks later, bringing the Pitt total to five, the Panthers woke up with a double play to close the bottom of the fifth.

Pitt finally got on the board in the top of the sixth, scoring off of a sacrifice fly. A walk brought in one run, and a single brought in two more. The Panthers had stormed back to make it 6-4.

Dark’s game was over in the sixth, replaced by redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Britton Rogers after four straight Pitt runs. Rogers struck out one batter to stop the Panther onslaught.

UNC immediately responded, scoring two runs — both with two outs. The first from Thompson and the second came from first-year pinch runner Ella Fox sliding straight into the Pitt catcher, who fumbled the ball, allowing Fox to score. The Tar Heels were up 8-4.

“Whenever there's two outs, the defense lulls a lot, and they think the offense gives up,” Thompson said. “A big thing for us is to push hard on two outs, I always think 'punch back.'”

Rogers, who recorded the save, closed out the game for UNC with a strikeout, sending the Panthers packing.

“Once you win the first two, you get greedy,” Head Coach Megan Smith Lyon said. “We knew it was gonna be a battle today, I’m really proud of our players for gutting it out today and coming away with a sweep.”
