Ph.D candidate Leah Frazier continued her work on breast cancer research in Chapel Hill on Monday, March 3, 2025. Her laboratory, located in the Mary Ellen Jones building, is home to several graduate students conducting pharmacology-based research.

Leah Frazier was elected to be the 2025-26 Graduate and Professional Student Government president, after the UNC Board of Elections released certified results Friday evening.

Frazier, a doctoral candidate in UNC’s pharmacology department, said that she feels honored to have been elected and that her goal in the position is transparency, advocacy and change for graduate and professional students at UNC.

“I’m committed to making sure that all graduate and professional student voices are heard at every level of decision making,” she said. “I want to focus on advocating for all students and making sure their concerns are addressed not only fairly, but transparently.”

Frazier said her campaign focused on speaking with students, saying that she has been active around graduate student issues before she decided to run.

With no candidates on the ballot due to the signatures collected between Feb. 27 and March 3 deemed invalid by the UNC Student Supreme Court, all candidates except for Robert Rampani were write-in options. Frazier received 130 write-in votes.

Frazier will begin her term following the adjournment of the April 8 GPSG Senate meeting.

Candidate and current Senator representing toxicology Nyssa Tucker received 310 write-in votes, but was disqualified following an emergency meeting held by the BOE on Friday afternoon after Tucker's campaign finance report was submitted 90 minutes after the 5 p.m. Thursday deadline.

Graduate and Professional Senators were also elected Friday, with vote totals for candidates ranging from one to 18 votes cast.
