On April 4, The N.C. Court of Appeals upheld Republican Court of Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin's claim that more than 60,000 ballots in the 2024 state supreme court election might have been counted illegally. Griffin, who lost the N.C. Supreme Court race against Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs by 734 votes, challenged the legitimacy of the votes last November.
Griffin alleged that ballots were cast by voters who did not properly complete registration. This ruling requires the N.C. Board of Elections to ask the contested voters to provide proof of identity within 15 business days after being notified. If a voter fails to comply, their ballot would be thrown out.
The ruling, which was decided along party lines in a three-person panel, will likely be appealed. The case would then move to the state Supreme Court.
The ongoing lawsuit has prevented either candidate from being installed as to the N.C. Supreme Court seat.
