West Virginia first-year guard Jonathan Powell committed to the UNC men's basketball team on Tuesday night, according to Inside Carolina. After the early departures of sophomore guard Elliot Cadeau and junior forward Jalen Washington, this marks North Carolina's first transfer portal pickup in the offseason.
The 6-foot-6, Dayton, Ohio native averaged 8.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 30 minutes in 32 appearances for the Mountaineers. He shot 37.8 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from beyond the arc in his first season with West Virginia. Powell went just 48 percent from the free throw line.
Out of high school, Powell was a three-star recruit — the seventh best prospect out of Ohio — but rose to a four-star after entering the portal on March 17. In his senior year of high school, he averaged 19.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 40 percent from three.
