The UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School will not hire any additional personnel through the end of April.
The temporary hiring freeze was announced in a Thursday email to business school employees.
Kenan-Flagler Dean Mary Margaret Frank wrote that the pause is driven by “political disruptions, shifts in international relations, and uncertainties about federal funding.”
Frank wrote that these changes require thoughtful consideration and planning.
After N.C. State University implemented a hiring freeze in mid-February, UNC System Media Relations wrote in a statement to The Daily Tar Heel that decisions surrounding freezes are made at the campus level, falling under the authority of each institution’s chancellor.
They also wrote that a UNC System-wide hiring freeze would only be implemented in “extreme financial circumstances.”
During a Feb. 28 Faculty Council meeting, Chancellor Lee Roberts said that UNC was not expecting to implement a hiring freeze.
The DTH contacted UNC Media Relations about the Kenan-Flagler hiring freeze, any possible extensions to the freeze and the possibility of any additional hiring pauses within UNC’s professional schools.
In response, The DTH received a statement attributed to Frank restating information from the original email and reaffirming that the school is implementing a temporary hiring pause through the end of April.
