UNC English Professor Florence Dore primarily spends her Tuesdays and Thursdays teaching students about Southern fiction and songwriting. But when Dore isn’t in the classroom, she’s spending her time preparing for the release of her third rock record.

Dore is an award-winning singer and songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. She’s released two records, written books and spoke at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now, she’s working on her third album, “Hold the Spark.”

“I have always been interested in both [teaching and music],” Dore said.

Dore, who is also a tenured professor at UNC, said that being able to produce creative writing like music gives her a better insight into the art form.

Throughout her educational career, from an undergraduate studying English to obtaining her doctorate in the same field, music was always important to Dore, who would consistently perform songs and do shows.

Dore said she took a break from producing records to raise her daughter. She began releasing music again after her daughter went to college.

She said she feels finding a balance between teaching and songwriting is easier now that she’s a full professor — but she puts emphasis on ensuring that her students come first.

“Anytime I have time to myself, I’m either writing my book or an article, or doing some administrative work or doing music,” she said. “So just picking and choosing, it’s a really nice position to be in.”

UNC sophomore Emilyn Bishop is taking English 409: Lyrics & Lyricists: A Collaborative Exploration of the Processes of Popular-Song Lyric Writing with Dore this semester.

Bishop wrote in an email to The Daily Tar Heel that she loves having Dore as a teacher because of her energy and welcoming presence.

“Her class is always the highlight of my day, and I think her teaching style is very engaging,” Bishop wrote. “Songwriting and performance is something that is very vulnerable, but she has always been extremely encouraging of our music.”

Kay Coughlin, a first-year at UNC, said Dore is an enthusiastic educator. Coughlin had her for his first-year seminar last semester, and is currently taking Interdisciplinary Studies 121: Triple-I: Performing and Imagining the American South, in which Dore is listed as one of seven instructors.

“She loves it when students are involved,” Coughlin said. "She cold calls students a lot of the time, which can be a bit stressful, but at least for me, it encouraged me to be more confident in myself and always contribute to class."

Last year, Dore received the 2024 Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. The UNC Board of Governors chooses one faculty member a year from each UNC System institution for the honor, utilizing a special committee convened at each university.

Dore, who received a medallion for the award at UNC’s 2024 spring Commencement, said she felt honored by the recognition.

“To be recognized for something that you love is just a terrific honor and a great feeling,” she said. “I was moved by the whole thing.”

Dore also described her relationship with creative writing and songwriting as being better able "to appreciate the beauty of it if you're creating beauty."

“I put being a mom, teaching, writing songs and playing rock shows all the same level of passion,” Dore said. "[Teaching is] one of my great passions."
