Those crafty kids at the LAB! Theatre are getting ready to mount their first production of the season, a darkly comic dramedy fresh off the New York stage. Now, we don’t know much about this production, but we do know that LAB! usually puts on a damn fine play, and this particular production — the story of a brooding high school student wont to commit violent crimes at his school and the family who tries its darnedest to love him — is right up LAB!‘s alley. Plus, all LAB! shows are free, meaning you have no reason not to check out some angsty teen comedy-drama this weekend.
Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet
Memorial Hall, Friday Oct. 8
8 p.m.
$10 students, $30-$85 general admission
For the first dance performance of its season, the Carolina Performing Arts series is bringing the avant-garde Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, based in New York City. The company isn’t all that old — in fact, it’s just about as old as the Carolina Performing Arts series itself — but they’ve been making a lot of noise in the dance world. The company will be premiering new works during their Friday performance, making the event one that shouldn’t be missed.
Hugh Masekela
Memorial Hall, Monday, Oct. 11
7:30 p.m.
$10 students, $20-$40 general admission
Tickets are moving fast for this global music master’s concert — and it’s not surprising. Hugh Masekela, an accomplished brass player and generally awe-inspiring type of guy, is a major figure in the world music scene, with hits around the world. It’s a pretty nifty grab that Memorial Hall will get to host Masekela on Monday — but the Carolina Performing Arts website tells Canvas that there aren’t too many seats left, so if you were thinking about going — think quicker.
The Mariinsky Orchestra with conductor Valery Gergiev
Memorial Hall, Wednesday, Oct. 13
8 p.m.
$10 students, $26-$72 general admission
Continuing a push by executive director for the arts Emil Kang to bring the world’s greatest orchestras to the Memorial Hall stage, the Mariinksy Orchestra — formerly the Kirov Orchestra — will play two dates in Chapel Hill next week. Conductor Valery Gergiev is in high demand the world over, and each performance promises to bring a different side of classical music to the Carolina Performing Arts series. Wednesday’s concert includes soprano Anastasia Kalagina — and Canvas might even be there, too.
Art
Ackland Art Museum
Gallery and Exhibits (10 a.m. – 8 pm Thursday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday)
Free admission
The Ackland Art Museum recently opened a positively lovely trio of new photography exhibits. We know that most people are going to be geeking out for Big Shots, the collection of Andy Warhol polaroids — Canvas will be in line there with you — but the other two shows (Counterlives and Enduring Likeness) give a truly telling look at photography in all its many forms.
Read Arts Editor Nick Andersen’s review of the three new exhibits here.
And if photography isn’t your bag, there’s always the continuing exhibit of glass and ceramic work that opened a few weeks ago. Complete with bold Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces, among more than 100 others, the exhibit should hold any Ackland enthusiast over.

Nasher Museum of Art

$5 general admission, $3 non-Duke students with I.D., free on Thursdays
The Record exhibit on vinyl art is awesome, Canvas’ friends at Diversions say. Enough said.

If you’re looking for Katelyn, check out the shows at the Artery, Weaver St. Realty and Uniquities — and relish in the free, free FREE evening of artistic exploration that is the 2nd Friday Art Walk. It may be a little chilly this early in the fall, but it is going to get even colder next time around — making this Friday the perfect time to check out the offerings. Canvas wants you to.
