President Barack Obama on Monday declared the month of October National Arts and Humanities Month through a Presidential Proclamation.
The initiative is designed to bring attention to American artistic efforts and encourage participation in the arts and humanities.
In one of the close personal chats I frequently have in my mind with Barack, he related to me numerous ways we can celebrate NAHM right here on campus. Here are a few:
- Draw something in chalk on the sidewalk.
- Hug a CUAB member.
- Throw paint on someone. It’s art.
- Stand on the steps of Wilson Library and scream for twenty minutes. It’s art.
- Call your mom (just because you should).
- Call your mom and tell her you’re dropping out of college while someone films you. It’s art.
- Ponder the human condition.
- Pledge lifelong financial support to an English major.
- Pledge lifelong financial support to a philosophy major.
- Pledge lifelong financial support to a history major.
- Wear a funny hat.
But really, take the month of October and get your arts on. Canvas will keep reminding and directing you to all the right artsy celebrations.
