Artist Nancy Cook has been working on her latest exhibit since 2008.
Her collection of textile art, “Seed Play,” is part of an emerging artistic field that focuses on the architecture of tree seeds and the cycle of life. It is on display in the gallery of the North Carolina Botanical Garden through Feb. 27.
Cook, a North Carolina native, has received international acclaim and has shown her exhibits throughout the state.
Her aesthetic is an amalgam of traditional, mixed and new craft media. She emphasizes the imagery and symbolism of maturity that shine through seeds, fruits and herbaceous plants.
Nancy Easterling, director of education for the botanical garden, said Cook’s art is highly original.
“It takes her interpretations of plants, seeds and she creates a piece of work but only using materials from one place in the world,” she said.
Laura Cotterman, director of publicity for the botanical garden, said Cook’s work is accurate but not scientific.
“Plant life and nature are beautiful and reinterpret life,” she said.
See the exhibit through Feb. 27 in the DeBerry Gallery for Botanical Art & Illustration at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. The show is free and open to the public.
