Summer and youth go hand in hand, so why not listen to some high school poetry or check out the photo work of some teenage cancer survivors? It’s hot outside, so take some time off to chill this week with these wonderful events.

LAB! Theatre preps for next year's seaon

New board members. New plays. New semester. At the end of the 2010-11 year, LAB! Theatre is already looking forward to what the fall semester will bring. The newly elected team of producing directors have been hard at work as this term winds down. “There have been a huge number of great proposals,” said Jess Adams, a new producing director.

Post-war play integrates aspects of theatre, virtual reality

The Department of Communications Studies and The Process Series present the world premiere of Christine Evans’ “You Are Dead. You Are Here.” The play follows an Iraq War veteran who is being treated for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder using the military software Virtual Iraq.

Creative Carolina brings Hollywood to UNC

As a part of the Creative Carolina week-long festival celebrating the arts in Chapel Hill, David Hyde Pierce and Brian Hargrove will visit UNC to discuss their experiences in professional television. Pierce is best known for his role as Niles on NBC’s “Frasier” and Hargrove wrote for the ’90s Nickelodeon show “The Secret World of Alex Mack.”

"All Shook Up" a peppy but struggling musical of jukebox mistakes

While the Pauper Players are clearly excited to be back in the Historic Playmakers’ Theatre — their old home — their latest production is rather dull. With a talented but listless cast, the Elvis Presley jukebox musical “All Shook Up” is long and pointless — and makes one realize that “Hound Dog” should never be arranged in three-part harmony.

Q and A with Adrian Grenier

Adrian Grenier is the first to admit that he’s famous for pretending to be famous. But that kind of self-reflexive awareness is exactly the kind of thing that Grenier — star of HBO’s hit comedy, “Entourage” — wants to explore in his work and art. He’s bringing his documentary, “Teenage Paparazzo,” to UNC’s Carroll Hall this Saturday.

The Scoop on Snoop: Founders of Pro- and Anti- Snoop Dogg Facebook Groups Speak Out

The ongoing story of Snoop Dogg’s pending concert at UNC — won in an online contest promoting Electronic Arts’ new game, “Bullet Storm” — continues, with a pair of rather lively Facebook groups arguing the hip-hop icon’s merits. Administrative hurdles aside, these groups open up a question Canvas wants answered: What do students think about Snoop Dogg, the artist?

Well, that was a short lived bit of warm sunny weather. But, since it’s officially Springtime, let’s look at it like a glass half-full — perhaps this week is really just a short lived bit of winter, who just can’t let go. One way or the other, there are tons of great things to do in and around campus this week, so bundle up and get out there. And trust us: Canvas is a whole lot better predicting cool arts events than it is the weather.

Morrison community director vying for Off-Broadway audition

In October of last year, UNC helped two of their own win an online contest for a destination wedding in Sweden by getting them the most votes. Now, another Tar Heel needs students’ help. Josh Alexander, Community Director for Morrison Community, has been dreaming of Broadway since he was 5 years old. And now he has his chance, but he needs some help to get there. Alexander entered an online video competiton for an off-broadway production of RENT- Alexander’s dream job. For the competition, Alexander had to submit a one-minute video of himself singing “Your Own Way,” a piece performed by the role of Mark in the show, the same role Alexander hopes to audition for. Alexander played the role two years ago in Company Carolina’s production of Rent. Fun Fact: Alexander filmed his video in the 7th floor Morrison study lounge after UNC beat Duke to gain the regular season ACC title. The winner of the competition gets a roundtrip ticket and one night stay in NYC in April for a live audition.

It’s really springtime when sitting out in the sun between classes means getting prematurely burnt (or after March 21, since that’s when the blooming season officially begins). Fun facts aside, sun and the short few weeks before that oppressive southern humidity sets in mean it’s the perfect time to explore culture in the Triangle.
