If you’re tastes are like mine, then you probably thought “Into the Wild” was great movie. As much as I liked it, I’m wary of any movie that attempt to emulate it without bringing much new substance to the table. This is what “180º South: Conquerors of the Useless” seems to be doing, producing “Into the Wild” for the older set, but in documentary form. The trailer sets up a journey of self-discovery in Patagonia and even plays up the original music aspect, much like “Into the Wild”’s much-praised Eddie Vedder soundtrack. Truthfully, it could just be a lackluster trailer, and the stunning visuals make it worth keeping an eye on as it develops.
This’ll throw you for a loop: Mark Wahlberg has a movie role where he doesn’t play the sole totally badass cop. In “The Other Guys” Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson have that title, although Wahlberg is certainly tougher than his accountant partner, Will Ferrell. The trailer isn’t exactly a laugh parade and at first glance it seems pretty easy to chalk it up as a “mismatched buddy cop” movie where clichéd hijinks ensue. Director Adam McKay has been involved in pretty much every Will Ferrell summer blockbuster comedy so far, so it’s impossible to rule out the film yet.
The new trailer for Neil Jordan’s fantasy drama “Ondine” is up, and all I have to say is: “Twilight” with a lot more fish. True, it looks like a much more respectable and legitimate film than its vampiric brethren, but I cracked up at the line “Your kind and my kind aren’t allowed together!” The official description is all about the intersection of “passion” and the “fantastical,” not to mention some unspecified dark and violent pasts, which isn’t particularly promising. Who knows? Maybe traditional water-nymph tales will replace sullen vampire romances as the next big thing for teenage girls.
