Psychedelic rock band Tame Impala paid a visit to the Cat’s Cradle last Thursday, playing to an energetic and sold out venue. The Australian group has been busy touring across the U.S. to promote its critically acclaimed sophomore album Lonerism.
The show started with an impressive opening act from fellow Australian band The Growl. The hard rock group gave a soulful performance that energized an already buzzing Cat’s Cradle crowd.
When Tame Impala eventually did come onstage, it gave fans a performance worthy of their anticipation. Accompanied by a pulsating, hypnotic display in the background, the band played a well-balanced mix of its two albums, Innerspeaker and
Lonerism, as well as its self-titled EP.
Though the crowd was lively throughout, when the band performed better-known hits such as “Elephant” and “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards,” the Cradle became ecstatic.
Tame Impala was most impressive when it was able to deviate from the original structure of its songs. Often times the five-piece band would break off into quirky, improvised, minute-long tangents. These breakdowns never bored and always kept the audience wondering what would happen next.
At the end of the show, frontman Kevin Parker thanked all of the “Carrboroians” for being a warm and energetic crowd. But based on the roar of applause that lasted well after the band left the stage, the pleasure was all Carrboro’s.
