Three of the biggest acts hailing from the Triangle area will unite Friday for a free concert held in the same small town that helped launch their careers.
Django Haskins is no stranger to the thrill of live musical performance. As the leader of the eclectic Chapel Hill-based band The Old Ceremony, he has gone from entertaining North Carolinians to culling followers at an international level.
With his 2006 record Night Ripper, Gregg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, rose to into the international spotlight. He’s not your typical musician: He takes bits and pieces of songs you already know and love, rips them apart and reorganizes the pieces into what’s known as a mash-up.

When a security guard had to tackle an animated and probably intoxicated audience member off stage, after he attempted a Lil’ Mama VMA reenactment during Slim Thug’s opening set, it was clear the night would be wild. On Sept. 13, rapper Big K.R.I.T. performed at Cat’s Cradle for the third time in his career. “High-energy performance” would be a euphemistic description of Thursday night’s event in Carrboro, as K.R.I.T. is notorious for nothing short of electrifying shows.
Though generally just the outside of a sweet summer fruit, the term “peach fuzz” is also a common nickname for the pubescent precursor to full-blown facial hair. In a strange way, it’s the latter that best describes Peach Fuzz, the impressive debut EP from Chapel Hill outfit The Evil Tenors.

I’ve covered Hopscotch for different publications for the past two years, and each festival has so far been memorable in its own way.
In 2009, The xx’s debut eponymous album achieved critical success, becoming the cult classic of London’s music underground. Fans could only pray that three years later, the band’s sophomore LP, Coexist, would achieve anywhere near the status of an adequate follow-up effort. Boy, will they be pleasantly surprised. “The Words” exemplifies the concept of a disappointing movie. The film engages itself in the ability to mislead an audience eager to see something worthwhile. The Words Dive verdict: 1 1/2 of 5 stars
Whether it was catching some day parties, checking out Built to Spill in City Plaza, running into Dan Deacon or indulging in some post-show empanadas, Friday’s festival was everything I had intended Hopscotch to be and a continuing celebration of some really great music.
It’s safe to say that the Hopscotch Music Festival is in many ways a musical Christmas for North Carolina music fanatics. Dive’s Elizabeth Byrum recaps her first night of the festival, a fast-paced, venue hopping night that included seven different performers.
Hopscotch Music Festival starts today, bringing 175 bands to downtown Raleigh across 15 venues. Four of these bands chatted with Diversions staff writers Thompson Wall and Alex Dixon about their excitement for the festival’s third round and who they personally want to see perform this weekend.
Starting today, thousands of people will descend on downtown Raleigh for the third incarnation of the Hopscotch Music Festival, happening this weekend.
The biggest problem with Yeasayer’s newest album is the fact that it followed its first two. But those unfamiliar with the Brooklyn trio will find a solid introduction to its idiosyncratic style in Fragrant World. Yeasayer Fragrant World Psychedelic Pop Dive Verdict: 2 1/2 of 5 stars
