Earlier this week, I had the honor of making over the Daily Tar Heel’s University Editor, Andy Thomason. A few weeks ago, The Dress Code held a contest where readers voted on the male editor that most needed a style makeover. Instead of going shopping, I raided Andy’s closets, and showed him some other options he can wear. Lucky for you – we captured every moment of it on video. Check it out here!
While making over Andy, we came up with some really helpful tips for putting together outfits that he can wear to class, to the newsroom and around campus that are casual and comfortable. For guys, this is the biggest challenge with dressing, since most of them don’t usually want to follow the ‘pain is beauty’ rule.
Boys, Here are your six tips for dressing your best:
1. Wear clothes that fit
Hem your pants and don’t buy your shirts too big. Instead of looking like your clothes are big, guys only end up looking sloppy.
2. Cargo shorts = no
I have no idea what people keep in all those pockets! I feel like cargo shorts only get wrinkled – instead just buy regular khakis, they are still shorts but look so much cleaner!
3. Show a little bit of your belt
This was a new concept for Andy. Your belt is supposed to sit in the middle of your belt loop, so you can see the pant and the whole belt.
4. Roll up your sleeves…well push them up
Make sure you cuff your sleeves once and push them straight up! Rolled up sleeves make any outfit less formal.
5. Don’t wear running sneakers as your regular shoes
Find a pair of shoes that are comfortable and stylish that are not the sneakers you wear to the gym. Running sneakers often are dirty and will only take away from an outfit!
6. Tame your hair/beard
Just make sure to have a clean shave (or a little scruff if you are into that thing) but don’t be overgrown! Every guy has their personal style, but there’s a huge difference between being scruffy and dirty and overgrown.
