Whether you are running late to class or the showers are all taken, it looks like thick, stretchy headbands are the way to go.
Though people have been sporadically sporting this style since the “80s workout” era, UNC students are wearing the headbands more frequently. Students recommend the style because the headbands are practical, comfortable, easy, and soft.
Emily Cruse, a junior psychology major from Kannapolis, N.C. commented that headbands are a cheap way to “hold the stragglers back”. She said, “If I’m putting my hair in a ponytail, I always wear one.”
Cruse found four bands for just $2 at Family Dollar. Many stores also have deals on these headbands, including:
• Target
• Family Dollar
• Urban Outfitters (though more expensive)
• Walmart
Another student showed off her personal style by making her own headband. Rachel McMahan, a first-year (possibly environmental science major) from Marion, N.C. said, “[I] found some cloth that I like and cut it up.” What a neat idea! She had her cloth band tied with a visible knot.
Pinterest has many creative ways to [economically] make your own headband. Styles include:
• Braided
• Flower accentuation
• Visible knot
• Beaded
• Pearl
• Lace
However, some people aren’t so crazy about the trend. Shavon Flowers, a Granville Towers employee, commented that the headbands “only look right on certain people.” At her job, she sees people in the lobby and feels the headband is “one of those trends that’s gotten out of hand.” She relates this new trend to the “hipster era” and says that she sees it a lot.
To be a trendy Tar Heel: Decide if this trend is right for you! If it is, make your own or find a good deal. Wear your headband to class, to the gym or wherever else you want to wear it. And when your hair isn’t exactly up to par, don’t worry about the frizz. With a headband that is your style, you can have confidence (despite the humidity) that your look is complete.
