3 misunderstood fashion rules

Along with the beautiful tops, exquisite accessories and divine dresses that make up everything that has to do with fashion, there are rules that people tend to have a love/hate relationship with.

The standard rules of fashion are beginning to go out of style as time goes on and as more people begin to formulate new fashion standards.

Many of these rules are taken too seriously and women tend to shame others for not living by rules that simply aren't applicable to everyday life anymore.

Here are three fashion rules that are incredibly misunderstood or taken far too seriously.

1. No white pants after Labor Day or before Easter/Memorial Day

This rule is possibly one of the most annoying things I have experienced in my 19 short years on this planet. Many women structure their lives around this idea and honestly need to come to terms with modern day reality.

White pants are indeed okay to wear year-round. It really just depends on what you wear them with.

Winter whites are a thing and pairing any shade of tan or ivory with your beloved white pants can make you look like a winter wonderland. Play with pairing neutrals with white pants if it is cold outside, but by no means should you avoid them all around come November through March.

Just please don't wear them with Uggs.

2. No mixing patterns

Mixing patterns is something many automatically assume will look tacky and will clash.

This assumption can be right in certain circumstances, but up and coming designers, along with classic ones, have proven that if done right, almost any pattern combination can be done and can be done well.

Some patterns, like cheetah print or snakeskin, are being used as neutrals for the base of an outfit.

A rule of thumb for mixing your patterns that will almost always save you from looking tacky or clashing is making sure your patterns contrast in a complimentary way. Try pairing smaller patterns with larger prints to balance each other out.

Stripes are also a pattern that can be considered a neutral and can be combined with several contrasting colors or prints to take a look to the next level.

3. You can't wear black with navy

Many years ago if you wore black and navy, you may as well have been condemned to fashion hell. But the color combination is proving to be an increasingly flattering, chic and powerful combination.

The colors cannot simply be thrown together in a random, casual way. They are delicate enough to have to put some thought into how you put them together.

An easy way to accomplish the trendy combination is to try and find it in one piece. Look for tops that have a black and navy pattern or a fun dress that utilizes the two colors.

Try to not throw on a navy top and a black cardigan, then call it a day. That does not portray the look to the best of its ability.

Another way to incorporate this look into an everyday wardrobe is to use accessories. Using shoes, bracelets or a statement necklace to achieve this look is an effective way to do so, without overdoing it or looking like you got dressed in the dark.
