DRESS CODE

Fashion Inspiration: Pretty Little Liars

One thing that we can say about the cast of the ABC Family hit TV series, Pretty Little Liars, is that the characters Aria, Hanna, Emily and Spencer are always on their clothing “A”-game. Here’s how to dress like them.

Christyn Gerber

Name: Christyn Gerber Year: Senior Hometown: High Point, NC Major: Psychology & Anthropology Tangerine is one of the Spring 2012 Top Must Haves. After seeing this tangerine and navy color combination, it’s reconfirmed. The look perfectly contradicts itself because it’s both minimal and eye-catching, creating an effortlessly chic look.

Mariem Masmoudi

Name: Mariem Masmoudi Year: Senior Hometown: Tunisia Major: Policial Science and Religious Studies Mariem’s outfit is a great example of how to match your colors without going overboard. Mariem said her patterned skirt is from Tunisia which she paired with a black tank and pink cardigan, both from Forever21, and white sandals from Belk’s. Mariem is also wearing a beaded necklace that her friend gave her after she complimented it.

Mahati Sridhar

Name: Mahati Sridhar Year: Freshman Major: Business Hometown: Raleigh Mahati is wearing a floral dress from Old Navy paired with a motocycle cut denim jacket and Target sandals. I love how the jacket’s more eddy cut makes the classic pairing of a floral dress and a jean jacket unique. Also, mixing the springy colors of the dress with the tribal beaded sandals is a cool way to mix your prints. Mahati said she is inspired by springtime and colors.

Kat Kucera

Name: Kat Kucera Year: Freshman Major: Psychology Hometown: Cary I spotted Kat getting ready to perform with her friend, Chris, in the Pit. I like how she took the most basic of uniforms, jeans and a tshirt, and made it unique. Kat is wearing a floral top from JC Penney, slightly high waisted black skinny jeans from Urban Outfitters and shoes from Payless. She also has on gold earrings from Charlotte Rousse which are difficult to see in the picture but really popped because she put her hair up. Wearing high waisted jeans can switch up the average jean silhouette and look great paired with crop tops.

Nisa Gabbidon

Name: Nisa Gabbidon Year: Junior Major: Psychology Hometown: Sunrise, Fla. I really like Nisa’s outfit because the it is a mixture of professional and laid back, which is sometimes really difficult to achieve. Nisa is wearing a black blazer from Target with a white t-shirt dress from American Apparel paired with black leggings and brown riding boots from Sweden. To add some color, Nisa added a blue and gold charm necklace. I think this outfit is awesome for class but could also work for an interview, which is something many people may be worrying about with internship season quickly approaching.

Taylor Fulton

Name: Taylor Fulton Year: Junior Major: Peace, War, and Defense Hometown: Atlanta, Ga Taylor is wearing the perfect outfit for spring. Long skirts, regardless of if they are on trend or not, are always good for warmer weather, and Taylor’s skirt is no exception. Taylor pairs her coral midi-length skirt with a beige tank top she says is probably from Forever21 and tan gladiator sandals from Target. The best part of her outfit is the long feather earring on Taylor’s right ear from Urban Outfitters. As you can see from her outfit, Taylor said her priorities when dressing are color and comfort and also pairing solids with gold accessories.

Dress Code 101: How to Dress for an Interview

Spring is here, and you know what that means: time to nail down that summer internship. If you’ve reached the interview stage already, the last thing you want to worry about the morning of is what you’re wearing, but it’s still important to make a good first impression. Interview wear is hard to nail down— you know you have to look polished and conservative, but you don’t want to look like you’re wearing your mother’s pantsuit. So here are some unprofessional, well-informed tips.

Rachel Atkinson

Name: Rachel Atkinson Year: Freshman Major: Undecided Hometown: Durham As you might have noticed around campus, the sundress is back from its winter hibernation. Everywhere you look, girls are wearing dresses with flowers or ruffles or spaghetti straps in pastel shades. Rachel’s light blue dress has a ruffled v-neck with buttons down the front. Rachel said she found her dress in the back of her closet over winter break and it was a bit discolored, so she decided to dye it blue and wear it again. She perfected her outfit with a brown belt and two-toned brown moccasins, which are both from a thrift store.

Best Dressed at the Oscars

Everyone always wants to know who will win all the awards at the Oscars, (congrats to The Artist) but they also want to know who will be best dressed. This year did not disappoint with the new crop of stunning dresses celebrities wore on the red carpet. Reds and sleek, classic silhouettes dominated the event. Check out Dress Code’s top five best dressed actresses at the Oscars: Michelle Williams Williams looked amazing in a coral-colored Louis Vuitton dress. The dress was tiered and had a silver bow at the waist. The Best Actress nominee paired the dress with a diamond necklace and similar colored coral lipstick. Gwyneth Paltrow Paltrow looked very chic in this minimalist white dress by Tom Ford. At first, the matching white cape-type shawl that Paltrow wore was a bit questionable, but Paltrow pulled it off. Paltrow wore the sleek dress with slicked back hair to complete the look.

Jessica Smith

Name: Jessica Smith Year: Sophomore Major: Environmental Science Hometown: Charlotte I love the mix of prints in Jessica’s outfit and I think that is what makes her outfit unique. Jessica is wearing Juicy Couture black corduroy pants, a Madewell striped shirt, an olive colored jacket from H&M, a printed scarf from India and Urban Outfitters snakeskin shoes. Some people might think wearing a striped shirt could be limiting because its technically a print, but a striped shirt is very versatile. Jessica reflects this perfectly by pairing her shirt with a multicolored scarf and neutral colors for everything else.

Evangeline Mee

Name: Evangeline Mee Year: Senior Hometown: Knoxville, TN Major: Dramatic Arts and Folklore I love how Evangeline’s outfit mixes so many textures but still looks put together. She is wearing a colorful Estate Sale scarf, Urban outfitters vest, a cardigan, boots from a PTA thrift store and shorts that she says she has had since high school. Evangeline said she does not keep up with trends or read magazines but gets inspiration from the sale rack. As you can see from Evangeline’s outfit, her tip was to use texture in your outfits. Her outfit shows how you can mix many difference pieces of different textures and colors if you stay within the same color palette. She mixes tweed shorts with a knitted sweater and a light scarf. She also has different shades of brown and navy mixed with black and grey with a pop of color from the scarf. Many people might think that mixing this many textures colors would be difficult but Evangeline proves it really is not.

Trend: Colored Denim

In the past few weeks, I have been seeing a lot of colored denim online and also on campus. Back in the fall after Fashion Week, many people predicted colored denim to be a trend in the spring and now it is everywhere. Caitlin McGinnis, a senior Journalism major from Concord, is rocking the colored denim trend in her wine colored Seven for All Mankind jeans mixed with an army green coat and a colorful scarf. Some people might think that wearing colored pants limits your outfit, but Caitlin proves that it definitely does not. Colored denim is easy to wear if you mix it with neutrals and try to incorporate the color of the denim into one accessory, such as a printed scarf. Caitlin said she reads Vogue, Elle and many fashion blogs, including the amazing Man Repeller. Caitlin also said she loves pants in general — she owns a velvet pair and hopes to purchase some snakeskin ones in the future.

Grace Farson

Name: Grace Farson Year: Freshman Major: Photojournalism and Food Studies Hometown: Davidson Grace loves to incorporate different patterns and textures into her style. Grace said her look is inspired by her frequent travels to Asia and styles from the 1950s and 60s. She loves the current trends of elbow patches, sweaters and layering, but hates the campus trends of university shirts. Grace’s favorite places to shop are Goodwill and The Salvation Army. While most of Grace’s outfit is in the same color palette, she keeps her outfit interesting by introducing a variety of textures and proportions. Her champagne-colored lace dress adds elegant texture, while her beige-and-white striped cardigan makes her outfit more casual and introduces a classic pattern. Grey ribbed tights give the outfit more texture and a cozy feel, as does her infinity scarf. A fur vest creates interest with bold texture and has a contrasting proportion to the rest of her outfit. Her brown boots give the outfit some rustic polish and her socks provide a nice pop of pink.

Amy Anderson

Name: Amy Anderson Year: Senior Major: Classics and Archeology Hometown: Charlotte Amy is wearing: Shoes from PTA, tights given to her by her grandma, a skirt from Urban Outfitters, a turtle neck and plaid shirt from Goodwill and a jacket she bought in Paris. Amy describes her style as New Romantic inspired by London in the ’80s, and her style icons include musicians Siouxsie and the Banshees and Allison Mosshart. Amy takes an interesting approach to fashion — she takes her style inspiration from characters that she imagines. She said she sees fashion as a form of playing dress up and a way to take a few minutes to creatively express herself. Amy’s favorite places to shop include Goodwill, vintage stores and thrift stores. Amy said she likes seeing people wear Doc Martens, knit scarves and sweaters, chartreuse, ’70s upholstery-style prints, leopard, and vintage pieces.

Maggie Owens

Name: Maggie Owens Year: Freshman Hometown: Durham Major: Linguistics Maggie’s outfit was the perfect ensemble for today’s perfect weather. When it is January and it is in the 60s but there is still a chill in the wind, it is difficult to figure out what to wear. Maggie’s patterned sweater from Goodwill paired with J. Crew cords and oxfords and a thrifted belt are just warm enough for the weather without being hot with the unseasonable temperatures. I love the mix of colors and textures in the striped chunky sweater and wine colored cords. Maggie’s outfit could honestly transcend any season if you ask me, but she says she does follow trends. Colored pants are very in right now so her cords are on point as are her brown oxfords.

DIY: Origami Hair Pin

Getting bored with mass-produced accessories? Want to create something with minimal effort so people will think you’re awesome? Try this origami lotus hair pin — it’s easy, looks interesting and you can find most of the supplies around your dorm room.

Caroline Nagle

Name: Caroline Nagle Year: Junior Major: Global Studies and Hispanic Linguistics Hometown: Raleigh I saw Caroline in the Pit when the weather was slightly dreary but her outfit was everything but. I love the combination of colors and textures that she mixes to pull the outfit together. The leopard coat mixed with the green denim shorts and patterned tights is kind of unexpected. This is also a great example of how to wear denim shorts in the winter. Her coat and shoes are from Urban Outfitters and her top (which is actually a bodysuit) and shorts are from American Apparel. Caroline said she gets her style inspiration from her friends, especially the ones in Saint Anthony Hall, and also from fashion blogs.

Brynne Henn

Name: Brynne Henn Year: Junior Major: Global Studies Hometown: Raleigh Brynne is wearing: A shirt from the Gap, a skirt, scarf and tights from Urban Outfitters, earrings from Target, and boots from Nordstrom. Brynne describes her style as flirty, easy and focused on accessories. She gets her style inspiration from hippie, bohemian styles and the website Pinterest. Brynne loves to shop at Modcloth, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Gap and Target. Brynne said she loves the trends of skirts with tights, natural, wavy hair and boots — especially during the winter.
