Emma Dunlap-Grube

Name: Emma Dunlap-Grube Age: 22 Hometown: Iowa City, IA Year in School: Senior Major: Music, I play the cello! It has been far too long since I’ve posted anything, though I’ll put it down to a number of things that I will address in a separate update (expect plenty of ranting and raving). Anyway, managed to race across the quad with impressive speed and catch up with Emma, and I am glad that I did. Obviously, what stands out at first is the hair. That is a bold move and I’m just going to take it as a sign of individuality, confidence and a real fun side! It is always good to see a cuff on jeans around campus, no matter how big, and the shoes are great; I have been looking for a pair of buck saddle shoes for ages and whether its bucks or brogues, I think it is a solid move when combined with some denim. The jacket, again, is eye-grabbing and the detail in the pattern draws you in for sure. Finally, the tartan scarf is so strong on a campus that can be so bland at times. Thanks Emma for brightening up my day!

Incorporating science into the fashion equation

Enjoyed the warm weather last week? As you pull out spring clothes or work on your shopping list, you might want to keep some science tips in mind when picking colors. According to study of color science, there are some colors that are universally flattering, regardless of your skin tone or hair color. Here are some colors presented by scientists as being attractive to the eye:

Harrison Lee

Name: Harrison Lee Age: 21 Hometown: Durham, NC Year: Junior Major: Philosophy I knew there was a story behind that sweater. Harrison recently spent a significant amount of time in Bodh Gaya, a Buddhist pilgrimage site in Northern India, and managed to travel a fair bit afterwards – picking up this Tibetan sweater in Darjeeling! It is always nice when a material object, like an item of clothing, is linked to so much more; a thread connecting you to memories of those special experiences. Clothes can give you confidence, communicate something to others, or they can even take you places. That may sound like a bit of stretch, but I bet that sweater means a lot to Harrison, and wearing it probably takes him back to that time in India. Besides that little story, I thought I would comment that those glasses are top class, and the Chrome bag tells me Harrison likes his biking – those are bloody brilliant.

Fjällräven Kånken

I thought I would test out this site’s trend-setting potential by pushing one particular item I would like to see more of around Chapel Hill. The Fjällräven Kånken has remained unchanged for over thirty-five years and has established itself as an absolute classic thanks to its functional design, ideal size and fun colors. Fjällräven, a Swedish manufacturer of outdoor goods, is world-renowned for their dedication to quality and durability, though it is a shame their prices are a tad high given the import fees. However, over the past few years online stores have been finding ways to put the Kånken on the streets and I think they are starting to catch on. I have only seen a handful on campus, but it would nice to see some more around Chapel Hill – the Kånken will be you companion for a long long time. Promise. I admit I may be a tad biased as I have one myself in bright yellow. But still.

Taylor Bacques

Name: Taylor Bacques Age: 20 Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana Class: 2013 Major: International Studies, Comparative Literature Charting the history of ‘upper-middle class cool’ is an impossibly complex task given the number of nuanced versions of this original look that have emerged since the 1950’s. Magazines, bloggers and designers alike must wrestle with the semantics, particulars and often incoherent conceptions of a classic style that has seen itself reborn in various forms on the fairly regular cycle of other fashion trends. So please bare with me as I try to communicate some brief musings on a style that I personally identify with, especially since I have been out here in the States; I’m glad to have moved on from my days as a ‘Sloane Ranger’, but that’s another story.

Sean McKeithan

Name: Sean McKeithan Age: 23 Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA School: UNC Grad 2009 Major: Communication Studies For most, lugging books and plenty else is a hefty burden to bear. Functionality and durability are the two main criteria when it comes to bag selection on campus, but that does not mean we must settle for the standard issue models sold in back to school sales. Take Sean as an example of someone who has sought out an item that oozes quality and craftsmanship. Here we have a Duluth pack: made in the USA, guaranteed for life, and Sean was even able to customize the pack himself. I think carry goods that can stand the test of time, whilst looking top notch all the while, are vital for anyone on the move like us students and young professionals. Love the rest of the look too; sharp blazer softened up with that scarf. Nice.

Peter Pendergrass

Name: Peter Pendergrass Age: 21 Hometown: Greensboro, NC Year in School: Senior Major: Studio Art & Performance Studies The poncho/cape is never an easy one to pull off. Not sure if I know many people who could get away with this outfit, but Peter just owns it. The subtle shades of grey with the scarf and shirt contrast really well with the strong blacks featured in the rest of the look; complicating things a little, adding sophistication. The texture of the scarf is definitely interesting and the way in which the poncho item is all wave-like around his body is pretty special. Enough pretentious talk. Peter is fabulous.

Rachel

Name: Rachel Lewallen Age: 19 Hometown: Concord, NC Year: Sophomore Major: Performance studies I actually know Rachel personally and I don’t think there has ever been a day when she hasn’t been straight up ‘working it’. I have always felt she takes the phrase ‘wear you heart on your sleeve’ to a whole new level as she compliments her personality that is just brimming with energy with lovely colors or little idiosyncratic gestures in her outfits. Here, Rachel adds some color to a rather bleak day with those perfect red socks and gloves combination. The jacket, skirt and leggings all in black create the contrast and makes you take notice. Cannot say enough about this one.

Xuan

Name: Xuan Age: 25 Hometown: China Year in School: 4 Major: Statistics The bright yellow duffle coat (toggle coat, whichever term you prefer) certainly caught my eye! The duffle coat has seen somewhat of a resurgence in popularity in recent years, much like the Navy pea coat, and Xuan’s pick is a nice balance between fun color and classic outerwear. The Longchamp school bag is a classy option and the UGG boots are a surprisingly successful compliment to the outfit. I am still unsure how I feel about UGG boots in general, but there is no denying how toasty they are on these frigid winter mornings!

Dress Code: This Time Around

The beginning of a new year, and of course another semester, is often met with a blend of excitement for the fresh start and anxious anticipation of the many challenges such a new beginning might bring. For me, I am eager to push things forward with regards to this site and also aware of the commitment developments will require. It would be marvelous if you all could help me out and ‘dress to express’ – make an effort to put yourself out there! Last semester was certainly a learning experience, though this year I think Dress Code can become something more. More people, more commentary and more insight into what style really means. So here’s to a new look Dress Code , fancy logo and all!
