DTH at a Glance

If you're a fan of singer-songwriter JoJo, do read this.

If I can say anything not libelous about my experience with Counseling and Psychological Services at UNC, it'd just be: "They try."

At the end of my first year at UNC, I was having a bad time on a lot of fronts. I was struggling with my depression. I almost quit The Daily Tar Heel. I listened exclusively to my Taylor Swift albums, and not even the fun records like "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." I went to CAPS, and the guy I talked to for 20 minutes was, like, super nice for someone I only knew for 20 minutes.

But then they basically told me that was the most they could do and that I should probably find someone to see outside UNC, which is irrefutably the professional equivalent of sending the shrug emoticon to your friend who's texting you about significant life problems.

QUICK HITS

  • With talk of affordable housing revving up in Chapel Hill, some residents and officials are concerned about factors driving the decline of the town's mobile homes.
  • UNC women's basketball crushed Mount Olive in a 99-45 victory during Monday's exhibition.
  • A new policy means students convicted of honor code violation will receive an X next to their failing grade on their transcript, in similar fashion to the Black Spot in "Muppet Treasure Island."
  • A new UNC working group is forming after some expressed concern about Counseling and Psychological Services' not offering any kind of long-term therapy options.

IN LGBT NEWS

On Nov. 3, North Carolina lost three of its nine openly LGBT elected officials. The Orange County election saw the removal of Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt and town council member Lee Storrow, both of whom are gay. Statewide, the numbers now round out enough to ensure LGBT elected officials are just barely not outnumbered by films in the Harry Potter franchise.

IN TOWN SHOWS

The new faces in Chapel Hill government are focusing in on town development projects. Mayor-elect Pam Hemminger and two new town council members all have ties to Chapel Hill Alliance for a Livable Town (found out what the heck a CHALT is!). They intend to show opposition to projects like LUX and Weaver Street Crossing. Because if anything screams "livable town," it's not choosing not to develop it.

IN CAMPUS NEWS

The Carolina Union Activities Board still doesn't know who the heck it's bringing for Jubilee. They have the results of what artists students voted to see, but they aren't releasing them until they work out their budget a little better. So there's still hope of write-in candidate Nicki Minaj winning! If not, they better get a performer of at least equal or greater importance as "Leave"-era JoJo.

IN THE FUTURE

Companies like Viacom and NBC Universal are working on ways to invade your mind. They're working on biometric tracking and monitoring to figure out what people like seeing. I hope they someday try to enter my mind as I watch TV. I also hope they enjoy elevator music.

IN THE BLOGS
