DTH at a Glance

If you designed the new state logo for North Carolina, don't read this.

Welcome back, readers!

I hope you enjoyed your hiatus from my spamming your inbox, and I trust your break was as too-short-but-surprisingly-satisfying as every episode of Aziz Ansari's "Master of None."

Our staff has finally returned to work, so At A Glance will be back to publishing with the unwavering reliability of Olivia Pope or recycled plot points from "Vampire Diaries." I can be found sitting at the back of all my classes and continuing to watch the subtitled versions of the six TV shows I binged over break.

On another note, while you were gone, you might have missed some devastating news: Southern Rail, a restaurant, music venue and Carrboro staple, finally came to an end after nine long, beloved years. Kind of like "Scrubs," which was third on my list.

QUICK HITS

  • Chase Dining Hall, exclusively called "Rams" by anyone who's been on campus in like 20 years, is set to expand its dining operations to the second floor by fall 2016.
  • The UNC men's swimming team beat the U.S. Naval Academy 173-127 on Saturday, meaning UNC is better at swimming than the aquatic branch of the American government. Or something like that.
  • Chapel Hill and its fleet of 11 snow plows have begun preparation for winter — and under their watch, I'm confident this year's two inches of snowfall will only cripple society for three or four days.
  • North Carolina launched a "Booze It & Lose It" campaign to fight drunken driving and underage drinking this holiday season. Among other things, it increased DWI checkpoints and marketed against parents teaching their kids how to drink.
  • UNC might finally be piloting contextualized transcripts in fall 2016, ruining the lives of non-science majors (even more) forever.

IN TOWN NEWS

After nine years of business, Southern Rail just came to a grinding halt. The Carrboro restaurant/music venue/coffee shop/business equivalent of a Renaissance man finally closed its doors at the end of 2015. Its owners said they hope the legacy of "Carrboro's living room" will continue to live on.

IN CAMPUS NEWS

UNC Hillel recently installed two gender nonspecific bathrooms, which are surprisingly uncommon at UNC. Hillel converted two bathrooms on the second floor of its building in November in an attempt to be more inclusive for LGBT community members, people with young kids of a different gender, or anyone who just feels more comfortable in a neutral bathroom.

IN MUSIC FESTIVALS

Chapel Hill just finished hosting the 19th annual Elvisfest, and it was full of beer and bacon and Elvis references I don't understand. Co-founder David Quick spoke with the DTH in a valiant effort to explain those references, discuss his favorite parts of Elvis and share how bacon consumption affects beer sales.

IN ART OF THE STATE

A UNC design professor answers questions about North Carolina's new "Nothing Compares" logo. Because trust me — people have a lot of questions. If you're unfamiliar with the design, just know it's more or less a $1.5 million "you tried" star.

IN THE BLOGS

Some of our podcasters got self-care advice from an inspiring recent graduate who sort of has her life together. Just in time for the soul-crushing return of spring semester, Having It All hosted Park Cannon, who has a chance at being the youngest queer woman of color elected to Georgia's State House of Representatives.
