DTH at a Glance

It takes more than a blizzard named after a Disney boy band to cancel this newsletter

If you 1) have been mysteriously absent from social media for the past 12 hours, or 2) are, like, ardently doomsday prepping and haven't walked past a DTH box yet: Today brings something you (and we) have never experienced in your time here. Not the snow, although that would've been a fair guess.

Despite many of our editors and staffers working through Snowpocalypses of previous years, and despite our willingness — eagerness — to do it again, the decision was made to cancel today's print paper, without consulting us. It's not something we condoned, agreed on or had a say in.

But our staff still came in last night and worked as hard as any other day to bring you today's news online. We still believe in what we're doing here at this 122-year-old organization — even if not everyone does. That's never going to change.

So, enjoy the snow, and check in with us for all the updates you need this weekend. We'll be hard at work.

QUICK HITS

  • For once, Roy Williams isn't sure what to tell you — since Jan. 4, Marcus Paige is sitting at 3-25 from the field and 1-17 from beyond the arc. Apparently, everyone has off days. Makes us feel better.
  • UNC dining halls will open at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Check our Twitter for hourly updates throughout the weekend.
  • Carolina Union Activities Board announced Jubilee will be April 16 this year, but they aren't talking to us about the details of much else. Sounds familiar.
  • Khushi opened in the old Hummus Cafe location this week. From what our blogger has gathered, it's basically a salad and Indian food equivalent of Chipotle.

IN ANONYMOUS COMPLAINTS

Kvetches are in this week, and they're remarkably not all about the weather! They're more about Alert Carolina. Or the classmates you're not willing to talk to in real life. Or alcohol. Nowhere else in your life will you ever be explicitly encouraged to anonymously complain, so hit us up for next week's Kvetching Board.

IN CAMPUS UPDATES

Electrical issues in Dey Hall have led to it and Wilson Library remaining closed until further notice. University employee Gaylan Bishop was injured by a fire in a Dey Hall electrical closet around the time of the blackout Wednesday. UNC Hospitals had no information on his condition at publishing time.

IN TOWN NEWS

Lo and behold, Carrboro is unsurprisingly a Mecca for bicycling. It's become increasingly common, having increased 79 percent in the last five years. Hopefully the trend is here to stay.

IN IDENTITIES

Life as a Muslim in the U.S. is marked with prejudice. Speaker Suehaila Amen broke the ice on campus last night, opening dialogue on what it's like to be a Muslim American and how many inaccurate perceptions and misinformation she's faced in her life.

IN POLITICS

You can turn out to vote in this election, with or without an ID. All you'll need to do is fill in your birthdate and last four digits of your social security number. To practice, feel free to send both with your full name to my email address.
