My last name does not lend itself to powerful nicknames

In high school, I knew this girl whose last name was Slaughter. She had a real advantage when it came time to pick the nicknames we would wear on the back of our jerseys during powderpuff.

But with a last name like "Weekman," I didn't have a lot of options. It's pretty naturally an insult, which sucks for someone who keeps trying to convince people she is a strong woman.

Anyway, journalist and certified strong woman Anne-Marie Slaughter is UNC's next commencement speaker.

We spoke to her about what she'll be speaking about, why her work is relevant to college students and the concept of equality.

She's sure to slaughter us all. Sorry. Danny will be back tomorrow.

QUICK HITS

  • In 2016, someone could be the first female, Jewish or Latino president. It's no surprise identity politics are coming into play for this election.
  • Marlanna Evans is featured on a Kendrick Lamar track, went to Cook-Out with the rapper and sat by Don Cheadle and Ciara at the Grammy Awards.
  • Chapel Hill will join AT&T's smart city program. Does this mean I'll finally get service in the Dean Dome? I have Verizon but will switch providers for the opportunity to better tweet during games.

IN STUDENT LIFE

College is supposed to be the best four years of your life, but for people with eating disorders, it's a huge challenge. And that's not something that happens to just a few people — it's one in four college students.

IN GRADUATE NEWS

Park Cannon is the youngest queer woman of color to be elected to the Georgia House. We talked to her about her campaign and her hopes and dreams.

IN OUR OPINION

Sports Editor Pat James is so remarkably kind and talented. He is very afraid of raccoons and to make up for the fact I have laughed about that a lot in the past 24 hours, I want to highly suggest you read his column about how Isaiah Hicks is playing way better than Kennedy Meeks these days.

IN THE BLOGS

No one except maybe Michael Fassbender wants Leonardo DiCaprio to lose more than I do. I mean, I'm sure he's a sweet boy, but if he loses, just think of the memes! So, which sad Leo are you?
