DTH at a Glance: It Ain't Fall Yet

Stop playing yourself, kid. You saw two yellowish leaves hit the ground yesterday and you’re calling it fall. But you’re not fooling me. I don’t care if the first day of autumn is on the 22nd—until the temperature drops below a constant 90, the date don’t mean a thing to me.

You can sip on all the pumpkin spice lattes you want. Mother Nature don’t care. Mother Nature is a cruel mistress.

When I can bust out an ugly, oversized sweater without busting out in back sweat, that’s when I’ll believe it’s fall. Until then, I’ll listen to Swerve’s bomb midterm season playlist while I neglect my responsibilities and online shop for my Halloween costume.

QUICK HITS

  • UNC Siren hosted a Standing with Survivors Rally on Friday in reaction to sophomore Delaney Robinson’s recent allegations that the University mishandled her sexual assault case.
  • Downtown Chapel Hill is ready as heck for football season. The town kicked off the best time of the year on Friday with a parade, food, music and (most importantly) dogs in Carolina blue scarves.
  • Hillsborough’s 34th annual Hog Day festival on Friday and Saturday brought home the bacon, raising money for charities like the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill and the Efland Ruritan Club.
  • The newest season of American Horror Story takes place in North Carolina. This comes in addition to the creepy clown sightings I complained about last week. Cool.

IN GENDER IDENTITY

Gender neutral bathroom signs will soon be replaced in restrooms across campus. After removing all gender neutral signs from the Campus Y in August, the university has plans to install more internationally recognized bathroom signs featuring a pictogram of a man and woman and the words “Restroom” or “Toilet Room”.

IN FOOTBALL

Wide receiver Mack Hollins’ touchdown senses were tingling before the ball even left Mitch Trubisky’s hands. North Carolina celebrated a 56-28 win over James Madison on Saturday, with Trubisky breaking several career and UNC records.

IN SUNSHINE

North Carolina’s solar power will soon increase. The Orange County Board of Commissioners approved the construction of Oakwood Solar Farm in Mebane. Although a start date for construction has yet to be set, a 53-acre plot of land has already been designated for the project, which will be located off of U.S. Highway 70.

IN PAYING RESPECTS

A marker was unveiled on Sunday in remembrance of 361 unmarked African-American graves at the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery. When the original marker resulted in community backlash over the lack of a proper dedication ceremony, a new dedication was created that better recognized the people buried there. The ceremony came after the cemetery was vandalized last week.
