DTH at a Glance: Grocery growth

As a suburban white girl, I was raised on supermarkets. The highlights of my early childhood include being allowed to push the shopping cart through the aisles of my local Sam's Club (they also include cutting my hair at my great-grandmother's house while "Tarzan" played and hiding from other preschoolers in a play kitchen, but those are both stories for another day).

Because of this, I'm thrilled for future generations of Chapel Hill children to experience the joys of a Wegmans. The Orange County location will be among the first in North Carolina and should be one of the biggest tax generators in the county. That's what I call a cleanup on aisle seven, y'all.

QUICK HITS

  • UNC has hit its deadline to respond to the DTH's public records request concerning documents associated with the University's sexual assault cases. We look back at the local and national history of campus public records requests and what they mean for today's case.
  • Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools are celebrating 50 years of desegregation in a Friday ceremony held at Northside Elementary School. One of the inaugural integrated sites still exists today as Chapel Hill High School.
  • Lindsey Harris has always kept her goals in mind. We look back at the women's soccer goalkeeper's journey to a starting spot with the Tar Heels.

IN VOTE-IVATION

Chapel Hill celebrities are using their votes as examples. Chancellor Carol Folt, Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger and student government representative Wilson Sink cast their ballots publicly on Wednesday while discussing the importance of voting. Carol even endearingly used the phrase "red, white and Carolina blue," so if that doesn't inspire you to vote, I don't know what will.

IN SEANCE SHENANIGANS

The night started with white nonsense and degraded into very serious worry. In an absolutely delightful narration, Swerve writer Noni Shemenski recounts her trip to Gimghoul Castle to tempt the spirits into visiting her and her friends for a seance. As someone who received live text updates of the event, I can confirm it was a wild ride.

IN ELECTION SUE-AGE

North Carolina's gubernatorial race is even more charged as Democratic nominee Roy Cooper faces a grievance filed by the N.C. Republican Party. The grievance, which claims that Cooper made unwarranted claims during a debate, comes too close to the election for Democrats' comfort.

IN PROBLEMATIC POWER

North Carolina WARN and Duke Energy are clashing over a proposal to install a natural gas power plant at Duke University. The North Carolina Utilities Commission is currently evaluating the pros and cons of the plan, which is more environmentally friendly than the university's current power options but still contradicts Duke's environmental goals.
