Good morning!
This may come as a surprise to all of you, but journalism was never my day-one career choice. Or my second, or my third. Those honors belong to the titles of wildlife documentarian, veterinarian and "being a dog," in reverse chronological order.
Given the latter, I went through a (super cute) phase of strong-arming every member of my family into watching the movie "Old Yeller" in its entirety every day for over a year until I turned 7. If that weren't adolescently charming on its own, I also happen to recall absolutely none of it 15 years later. I honestly couldn't even pick the dog out of a lineup.
That said, this endearing memory is being dredged from the pits of my subconscious this morning largely because of today's list of the best dog movies in Hollywood, courtesy of Swerve.

QUICK HITS
- In the wake of the Richard Spencer viral video, Benji Schwartz makes his opinion-page debut today by asserting that it is, in fact, still a douche move to punch Neo-Nazis. Even if it's (allegedly really, really) gratifying to watch.
- In "good things coming from N.C. State," a collaboration with UNC and First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University in China has created artificial stem cells for work in regenerative medicine.
- A local man is low-key living one of my childhood dreams by creating a documentary about the wildlife, ecology and conservation of Bolin Creek.
IN DAILY CRIME
Someone swiped a $500 "backpack blower" out of the bed of a truck Thursday afternoon. Another person had the cops called on them for having their TV on too loudly. Said person probably needs new neighbors.
IN THE WOMEN'S MARCH
Plenty of Tar Heels were among the more than 500,000 participants in Saturday's Women's March on Washington. Another 17,000 demonstrators filled the streets of Raleigh in opposition to systemic inequalities after the inauguration of Donald Trump.
IN-CLUSIVITY
The North Carolina gymnastics team partnered up with Nike's #BETRUE campaign to support LGBTQ athletes. The 4,071-person crowd the event drew on Friday night broke UNC's record by 719 people.
IN-EXPERIENCE
The inexperience of UNC women's basketball shined through in Sunday's 77-55 loss to Notre Dame. And with the Tar Heel's only senior out with an injury, the team needs to be falling back on its younger players now more than ever.
