DTH at a Glance: Scholars, studies and suits

Happy Hump Day, UNC! Read on for today’s headlines:

QUICK HITS

  • “I think (the letter) created an important dialogue that hadn’t been there before." UNC was sent a letter claiming that Silent Sam violates federal anti-discrimination laws on Sept. 13. Three weeks later, there's still uncertainty on whether or not it will turn into a lawsuit.
  • Carmen Gonzalez is leading the Lookout Scholars Program, which encourages interactions, relationships and support for first-generation college students.
  • “We’re having UNC students come and sit in wheelchairs and play basketball to see how hard it is to play the game.” Best Buddies works with people who intellectual or developmental disabilities in the UNC community. They brought that work — and some serious game — to the Pit on Tuesday.

FOOD!

  • A recent Temple University study called “Hungry and Homeless in College” shows that with the rising price of college tuition, student insecurities about food, nutrition and housing are ever increasing.
  • We hope you like pizza, because pizza restaurants are taking over Franklin Street. MidiCi will be the newest addition to the food scene on Franklin.
  • How would you like to own a coffee table made out of the wood floor from last year’s championship game court? Roy Williams can help with that for a good cause.

BLINDED WITH SCIENCE

  • The Carrboro Board of Aldermen is aiming for 100 percent clean renewable energy by 2050, as per a resolution passed at their Tuesday meeting.
  • Sierra Club laid out a cleaner energy plan for Duke Energy to promote renewable sources of energy and the creation of thousands of jobs for the state. A spokesperson for Duke Energy says it's unrealistic.
  • We love bragging about how we’re smarter than a certain school 8 miles away, but now UNC researchers have helped prove it. Some of the latest studies have helped burn fat with skin patches, creating diagnosis tests for malaria, HIV testing and more.
